FBI investigating possible extortion at Rutgers

Eric Murdock, the Rutgers employee who provided video of ex-coach Mike Rice verbally and physically abusing basketball players, may have tried to extort the university before releasing the video.

A person familiar with the situation told The Associated Press on Sunday that investigators are interested in Eric Murdock, who left his job as the men's basketball program's player development director last year and later provided the video to university officials and ESPN.

The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the inquiry has not been announced. The investigation was first reported by The New York Times.

A spokeswoman for the FBI's Newark office said the agency would not say whether there is an investigation. Murdock's lawyer did not return a call to the AP on Sunday. A Rutgers spokesman referred questions to the FBI.

A December letter from Murdock's lawyer to a lawyer representing Rutgers requested $950,000 to settle employment issues and said that if the university did not agree by Jan. 4, Murdock was prepared to file a lawsuit. The letter was obtained last week by the AP and other media outlets.

No settlement has been made. The video became public last week, and Murdock on Friday filed a lawsuit against the university, contending he was fired because he was a whistleblower trying to bring to light Rice's behavior.

The video's release last week set off a chain reaction that led to Rice's firing and the resignations of athletic director Tim Pernetti, the university's top in-house lawyer and an assistant basketball coach. Some critics want the university's president, Robert Barchi, to resign.

At a news conference last week, Barchi said the firing and resignations likely never would have happened unless Murdock provided the video to ESPN. Barchi said he did not see the video himself until after it had been made public.

Murdock, a New Jersey native who played for seven NBA teams from 1991 to 2000, was on the initial staff Rice assembled when he became the Rutgers coach in 2010. He left the team last year, though there are conflicting stories about the circumstances.

Murdock has said Rice fired him after he skipped a session of Rice's summer basketball camp, but has said he was targeted because he had spoken with others about Rice's conduct at practice. The university found in a report that Murdock was not actually fired and that he could have continued working at the school.

After Murdock left, he spoke with university officials about his allegations against Rice. He also used an open public records request to obtain hundreds of hours of videos of basketball practice. It's not clear who shot the original footage, but it was edited into the half-hour video later given to the university that touched off a scandal last week.

The university report on Rice, which was completed in December but not made public until Friday, criticized the video provided by Murdock as taken many situations out of context. While the report found fault with Rice's behavior in several instances, it also said he did not create a hostile work environment, as Murdock had suggested.

The report also said that Murdock had claimed some violations of NCAA rules ? including that he and others in the program paid players ? but he did not provide evidence.

After a review, university officials agreed to suspend Rice without pay for three games, fine him $50,000, send him to anger-management counseling and monitor his behavior.

Barchi said when he first saw the video last week he immediately decided Rice could not continue as coach.

There are more methods for internet marketing but if you are just starting out or have a little experience, consider using the six methods I have listed above. Research more on them online and start with a few. Be completely honest in your efforts. These methods are recommended because they work.

It's a tactic AT&T's used to great effect in many metropolitan areas where it offers wireless service. But short of acquiring more spectrum -- a costly and time-consuming process littered with legal roadblocks -- the operator's been exploring an alternative solution: small cells. Testing for these stopgap signal boosters (pictured above) has already been underway since late 2012, with a trial case study in Crystal Lake Park, MO that proved outdoor reception could improve by almost 100-percent. And that test site is just the start of a greater small cell rollout that should place over 40,000 of these units throughout AT&T's nationwide footprint by 2015. ElectNext Raises $1.3M To Provide Contextual Political Data To News Sites

If knowledge is a door to information, data is the key. When you’re talking about politics and government, information is extremely important to those who are making decisions on who to vote for and what legislation to get behind or block. Today, a company called ElectNext has raised a seed round of $1.3M led by Brooklyn Bridge Ventures along with other strategic investors like Liberty City Ventures, Comcast Ventures, Digital News Ventures, Gabriel Investments, The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation and Investor?s Circle. When I spoke with ElectNext’s founder and CEO, Keya Dannenbaum, she explained ElectNext as something similar to our own CrunchBase, providing widgets full of data for publications to embed: “We have a comprehensive underlying database (on politicians on our case as opposed to companies in the CrunchBase analogy) from which we create data-driven content that lives inside, and gives relevant context to, political news.” Dannenbaum knows politics, as she’s worked on 18 political campaigns, including Hillary Clinton’s. ElectNext’s product, which pulls together political data from multiple sources and packages them together for news sites to embed, is something that Dannenbaum thinks is important for both voters and journalists. Most political data is stored in formats that aren’t accessible online, so ElectNext is working with national and state partners like The Sunlight Foundation, GovTrack and Follow The Money as well as open data-friendly cities to convert all of it. [ Heroes is a short story I had written on a previous website, and thought for it to be a well-written story, so I published it here. ]

You are nothing to be fantasized about. You are a mortal, with flaws. You have pain and pleasure, given to you only with gratitude to be given back. You have no secret identity, your face isn't plastered on the cover of newspapers, drawing attention to all people. You aren't perfect, you aren't anything super or heroic for everyone to crave about. You aren't something served on a silver platter, something to be passed around and stared at with greed or envy. You are just a human. Sitting at a desk. In a grey little place. With a grey computer.

The town you live in is called New Hills, recently adopted by Mayor Timothy. He likes to be greedy, to grapple at money and coins, to smile with his few teeth. He is a terrible mayor. New Hills isn't very common to one's mind, as it isn't thought about from other people, nor is it recognized when a bunch of tourists pull away from that bending, cobbled lane in an aged taxi. Gaping with these large, annoying eyes.

The skies are mostly patterned with grey clouds, covering its blue hue. Rain comes down in a relentless sheet, pounding at the brick walls of buildings, of the glass covered in a dust. You wake up every morning to the damn rain, with the curtains pulled back because no light has an effort to come through that one, tiny glass space. You don't even have enough money to afford some special clothing embroidered with sparkles and that fake gems.

Why are these things even to be bothered about, anyway? No one cares that you can't wear those special boots all the people are exaggerating about, saying that they deliver the most softest comfort to the soles of your feet. You believe that they are just like any other boot. What's the difference?

These aren't important topics to rant about anyway. You should to back to your work. The papers too, don't forget the papers. The ink splattered across its surface like some party you hadn't attended. A party for throwing ink on paper. It would have been fun. All of the other parties were the focal point of alcoholic beverages. You don't favor alcohol. You can't forget the papers, because their you go again, thinking about all the other things.

New Hills is a weird place, with the brick walls, the dusty windows, the cobbled streets. It is like a London bistro, with out the incessant congestion of sweat from other people and the smell of elderly perfume. Cars rarely decorate the streets. Most people prefer travel by their own feet, or a bike. A bike that's rusted. No one can get anything decent in New Hills. Except Mayor Timothy, he needs everything.

You wish some hero would come. A hero, possibly, with some red cape, and a blue latex suit. To rescue you from work. Your gray work, the gray skies. Your graying personality, deemed useless by all the other popular people that crawl around. Greedy for passion and power. Mayor Timothy must be rubbing off on all of them.

So here is the major thing everyone wants to know, everyone wants to find out, because it affects them so damn much that they can't even put any effort into anything they wish to do. Work has ended, so you have left, you walk to your apartment in the rain, and sit at the foot of your bed. The television has some weird religious news topic on. You dislike them, because they waste your precious ranting time.

The people want to know, why are you so quiet? So alone, so uncomfortable with yourself, with the strange town you live amongst in this strange state. You rarely talk, no verbal command coming out of those chapped lips. You just sit. You just stare. You don't do anything except think or maybe mutter a few syllables once in a while.

Here is the plot twist, the answer, everyone is so expectant of. You are a normal human. No one thinks that. With a normal life. No one thinks that. You question yourself every time you say something, every movement, every action. Everybody thinks that. You developed yourself in a fantasy, an endless dream tormented with demons and that damn Mayor Timothy. You are still waiting for something so unnatural to give this person's life to become more decent? Let me add something, something vague and cute, to make everything sound like it is okay, because you are imperfect, since imperfect people deserve some respect.

You sit on the porch every morning, staring at the sun, because of your insomnia and depression and anxiety. You fear the demons will come once more, and your fantasies will end, because they run around squealing and screeching. Being their annoying little selves.

Southern Calif. man stages April Fool's plane joke

YUCAIPA, Calif. (AP) ? It's the plane crash that wasn't in Southern California.

The Riverside Press-Enterprise reports (http://bit.ly/YQ8fyA ) a Yucaipa businessman staged an elaborate April Fool's joke on Monday.

Billy Cheesman Jr. used a forklift to arrange a small aircraft on the fence that runs in front of his equipment rental business, as if it had nosedived there.

He also strung yellow caution tape around to make it resemble a crash scene.

Cheesman says someone gave him the two-seat experimental plane and he's been trying to figure out what to do with it.

He notified the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department before he set up the prank at Redlands Yucaipa Rentals.
