China's April auto sales rise 13 percent

BEIJING (AP) ? An industry group says China's auto sales rose 13 percent in April despite concern about a weak economic recovery while Japanese brands suffered less severe declines.

The China Association of Automobile Manufacturers said Thursday customers in the world's biggest auto market bought 1.4 million cars. It said total sales showed "clear improvement" at 1.8 million vehicles but gave no details.

Global automakers are looking to China to drive revenues but competition is increasing after sales growth that spiked to 45 percent in 2009 declined to more sustainable rates.

Japanese brands that have been hurt by tensions over a territorial dispute between Beijing and Tokyo suffered a 4.9 percent decline in overall sales from a year earlier. Still, that was an improvement over the previous month's 17.8 percent decline.

Highlights from Statistics Canada's 2011 National Household Survey

OTTAWA - Statistics Canada released the first tranche of results Wednesday from the 2011 voluntary National Household Survey, which replaced the cancelled mandatory long-form census. Some highlights:

? Canada was home to an estimated 6,775,800 immigrants in 2011, comprising 20.6 per cent of the population ? more than ever before and the highest proportion of all G8 countries.

? Canada's aboriginal population grew by 20.1 per cent ? 232,385 people ? between 2006 and 2011, compared with 5.2 per cent for non-aboriginal people.

? Almost half (48.1 per cent) of all children aged 14 and under in foster care in Canada in 2011 were aboriginal children.

? Aboriginal children aged 14 and under made up 28 per cent of Canada's total aboriginal population, while their non-aboriginal counterparts represented 16.5 per cent of all non-aboriginals.

? About 1,162,900 foreign-born people immigrated to Canada between 2006 and 2011, making up 17.2 per cent of the foreign-born population and 3.5 per cent of Canada's total population.

? More than 200 different ethnic origins were reported in the 2011 survey, with 13 of them representing more than a million people each.

? Nearly 6,264,800 people identified themselves as a visible minority, representing 19.1 per cent of the population. 65 per cent of them were born outside Canada.

? South Asians, Chinese and blacks accounted for 61.3 per cent of the visible minority population, followed by Filipinos, Latin Americans, Arabs, Southeast Asians, West Asians, Koreans and Japanese.

? More than 22.1 million people ? two-thirds of Canadians ? said they were affiliated with a Christian religion, including 12.7 million Roman Catholics, the largest single group.

? 7.8 million people, 23.9 per cent of the population, reported having no religious affiliation.

? Slightly more than one million people, or 3.2 per cent of the population, identified themselves as Muslim, while Hindus represented 1.5 per cent, Sikhs 1.4 per cent, Buddhists 1.1 per cent and Jews one per cent.

? 1,400,685 people identified themselves as aboriginal in 2011, representing 4.3 per cent of the Canadian population. Aboriginal Peoples accounted for 3.8 per cent of the population in 2006, 3.3 per cent in 2001 and 2.8 per cent in 1996.

? Only 17.2 per cent of aboriginals reported being able to conduct a conversation in an aboriginal language, compared with 21 per cent in the 2006 census.

? The survey, which replaced the mandatory long-form census cancelled by the Harper Conservatives in 2010, is filled with warnings that the data may not be as accurate, given the survey's voluntary nature.

Ariel Castro faces kidnap, rape charges

CLEVELAND? A man?accused of holding three young women captive for the past decade at his home has been charged with four counts of kidnapping and three counts of rape. The charges came the same day two of the three women were reunited at home with their families.

Ariel Castro, 52, is expected to appear Thursday in Cleveland Municipal Court on the charges. He, along with his brothers, Pedro, 54, and Onil, 50, were arrested Monday after victim Amanda Berry, 27, escaped from Ariel Castro?s home on the city?s west side.

After Berry called police, victims Gina DeJesus, 23, and Michelle Knight, 32, were able to escape, as well.

Ariel Castro faces four kidnapping charges because Berry's daughter, now 6, was held captive in the house as well. According to court documents, Castro repeatedly raped the women while he held them in captivity.

Court documents also show that authorities will ask the judge to set a high bond to ensure the safety of the victims and other citizens in the community, and ensure he doesn't skip out on court proceedings.

Ariel Castro's brothers have not been charged, but remain in police custody.

Deputy Police Chief Ed Tomba told reporters the women had been let outside twice in 10 years to walk from the Castro's house to the garage in the rear of the home. The women were forced to wear disguises on those occasions, he said.

City Councilman Brian Cummins, who told the Associated Press he was briefed by police on the case, said the three women were subjected to prolong sexual and psychological abuse. He said the women suffered multiple miscarriages while kidnapped.

The councilman also told the AP that the women were kept in a basement and were apparently bound with ropes and chains.

While Knight remains in a local hospital, both Berry and DeJesus went home to raucous crowds.

Berry and her daughter, Jocelyn, were taken by police escort to Berry's sister?s home, while DeJesus returned to her parents' tan bungalow. Both families live in the city's west side neighborhood, just a few miles from the ramshackle row house where they were were apparently held as prisoners.

Berry had been expected to address the crush of press awaiting her arrival after she and her daughter were taken home by police escort earlier in the day. But her sister Beth Serrano spoke briefly instead, saying Berry needed time to recover first.

?I want to thank the public and the media for their support,? Serrano said. ?At this time our family would request privacy so my sister, niece and I have time to recover. We appreciate all you have done for us for the past 10 years. Please respect our privacy until we are ready to make our statement."

DeJesus, wearing a bright yellow hoodie was quickly taken inside without speaking or showing her face. She was seen giving a thumbs up to the crowd of reporters and onlookers assembled outside.

Her parents, Felix DeJesus and Nancy Ruiz, and aunt Sandra Ruiz thanked the police and FBI for their assistance in the investigation. They asked for patience and promised to take reporter questions soon.

"The three of them are doing great. Those were miracles," Nancy Ruiz said of her daughter, Berry and Knight.

South Korean Newspaper May Have Just Printed the Worst Photoshop Ever

President Obama met with South Korea's President Park Geun-hye at the White House this past Tuesday, and as major world leaders are wont to do in each others' presence, handshakes abounded. This three-handed, two-roomed, Photoshop monstrosity was not one of them.

What makes this not just bad but inexplicable is that there were many photos taken in which the pair of presidents actually shake hands (see below). Yet Yonhap, South Korea's largest news provider, decided to take this opportunity to go for something, oh, a little more whimsical.

And while you may assume that there's no way they could possibly expect anyone to believe that Geun-hye is shaking Obama's third, disembodied floating hand, the caption underneath the photo begs to differ:

So what do we take away here? Are the clearly disparate backdrops symbolic of a cultural divide? Is that divisive third hand the manifestation of Kim Jong-Un? Did a toddler get loose in Yonhap's office right before press and wreak havoc? The world may never know.

Grizzlies advance, win 4 straight over Clippers

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) ? The Grizzlies are very happy after finally getting a bit of payback for their first-round loss to the Los Angeles Clippers a year ago.

They also made a bit of NBA history.

Memphis became only the 10th team in NBA history to win four straight after trailing 0-2 ? and the first to win the next four all by double digits. The Grizzlies won four straight postseason games for the first time in their short playoff history, ousting the Los Angeles Clippers in six games with a 118-105 victory on Friday night.

Zach Randolph, who had 23 points before being ejected with 1:57 left, said the Grizzlies had a lot of emotion in their locker room rallying from 0-2 when people thought they were down. Winning this series also makes up a bit for losing to the Clippers in Game 7 in this arena a year ago.

"Last year I thought we should have won the series, but we didn't," Randolph said. "It means more this time."

Memphis' win sets up a rematch in the Western Conference semifinals against Oklahoma City, the team that beat the Grizzlies in seven games in 2011, the only other time they won a playoff series. The Grizzlies will play Game 1 against the Thunder on Sunday in Oklahoma City.

"Sky is the limit for us," Grizzlies guard Tony Allen said. "To back up what he (Randolph) said, one game at a time has been our motto. We are a blue-collar team. We are going to grind it out game in and game out. We are just looking forward to Sunday, taking it one game at a time."

The Grizzlies and Clippers posted matching franchise records going 56-32 in the regular season. The Clippers had the No. 4 seed and home-court advantage after winning the season series 3-1 against Memphis, and they even won their ninth straight game going up 2-0 in Los Angeles. Then they wound up losing four straight for only the third time this season.

Now the Clippers have to decide whether to bring back coach Vinny Del Negro, who wants to return, and try to convince Chris Paul not to leave when he hits free agency in July. Paul said he has plenty of time to figure out his next move.

"Our season is over," Paul said. "There's nothing to take away from it. It is what it is. We lost."

Mike Conley also scored 23 points thanks to going 12 of 17 at the free throw line for Memphis. The Grizzlies finished with seven players in double figures. Tony Allen had a postseason-best 19 points and Jerryd Bayless had 16.

Reserve Matt Barnes scored a career playoff-best 30 points for Los Angeles. Paul had 28 points before being ejected with 2:29 left for crashing into Marc Gasol off a missed free throw, though he shook hands with several Grizzlies before going to the locker room.

Del Negro said he didn't understand how Paul could be thrown out of the game. Paul had never been ejected from the playoffs before, and he thanked an unnamed friend for reminding him to watch what he said to reporters.

"I got kids to feed," Paul said.

Blake Griffin didn't start because of his sprained right ankle, and he scored nine points in 13:56. Del Negro said Griffin's ankle was as big as a grapefruit limiting him to a few minutes at a stretch.

"This is not how we wanted it to end," Griffin said.

NBA Commissioner David Stern was on hand, as was Atlanta Falcons receiver Julio Jones. Conley had old Ohio State teammate Greg Oden in the arena as well. Having the commissioner on hand didn't slow anyone down in a game featuring lots of headlocks and knockdowns along with seven technical fouls combined. Even Grant Hill had three fouls in 3 minutes in the first half, and Chauncey Billups got a flagrant-1.

"They came out threw and everything at us," Memphis coach Lionel Hollins said. "They played small. They played smaller. They pressed. They zoned. They gave hard fouls. They really competed. We held our poise. Held up mentally tough-wise and were able to get the win."

Billups credited the Grizzlies for never letting them get into a rhythm or their Lob City run-and-gun approach.

"Because of that, we lose the series," Billups said.

Los Angeles led only once, 45-44 on Barnes' fourth 3-pointer with 5:08 left in the second quarter. The teams had four more ties before Quincy Pondexter hit a 3 with 2:02 left putting the Grizzlies ahead to stay at 54-51.

The Clippers had one last run, a 10-1 spurt capped by Caron Butler's 20-foot jumper with 5:16 left pulling them within 103-97. Conley hit a 3 followed by a 3 from Bayless, and Randolph scored inside with 3:06 remaining to push the lead back to 111-99.

Billups had as many fouls as points (four). He got that flagrant-1 in the third when he put his body into Conley trying to stop a fast-break layup attempt and putting his right arm around Conley's neck as they went to the floor. Conley hit the free throws, then hit a 3-pointer from the left corner giving the Grizzlies a 74-61 lead with 7:11 left.

After the bucket, Randolph and Griffin wrestled each other to the court in a tangle of bodies. That earned the duo their fourth double-foul in this series with Randolph getting a technical.

Paul picked up his technical for expressing his disgust when Randolph scored and picked up the foul. Griffin said the tape will speak for what happened on that play, but he felt a hand on his neck. Randolph said Griffin was pulling him down so he tried to brace for the fall.

NOTES: Hollins played for one of the nine teams that rallied from a 0-2 deficit. He was with Portland in 1977 when the Trail Blazers rallied to beat Philadelphia for the NBA championship. ... The Clippers did manage to snap a streak by the Grizzlies. Memphis had held opponents to 25 points or fewer in the third quarter in 52 straight games since Jan. 14, a streak 25 games longer than any other in the shot clock era. The Clippers scored 26 in the third. ... Memphis went 23-1 in the regular season when scoring at least 100 points and is 3-0 in the postseason. ... Memphis also had its 13th straight sellout in the postseason.

AT&T's Galaxy Note getting Jelly Bean via Kies on May 3rd

After watching its international counterpart make the jump to Jelly Bean, Ma Bell's version of the original Galaxy Note is finally scheduled to receive its due. Starting on Thursday, Samsung's Kies servers will begin offering Android 4.1.2 to AT&T customers rocking the smartphone / tablet hybrid. While the update brings a host of new features, the main course is the introduction of Popup capabilities for notes, video and browsing. Surprisingly absent from AT&T's changelog is a mention of Google Now, which is typically embedded in devices running Jelly Bean. We'll reach out to the carrier for clarity on this missing item, but in the meantime classic Note owners, prepare to bid Ice Cream Sandwich adieu.
