O.J. Simpson back in court seeking new robbery trial

LAS VEGAS (Reuters) - O.J. Simpson, the former football star and Hollywood actor who was famously acquitted of his ex-wife's 1994 murder, appeared in a Las Vegas court on Monday seeking a new trial on his conviction on a Nevada armed robbery charge.

Simpson, who appeared in court in blue jail garb with shortly cropped hair, is currently serving up to 33 years in prison for a 2007 armed robbery in which he claimed he was trying to recover his own sports memorabilia of his storied sports career and murder trial.

Now 65, Simpson was found guilty of the hold-up at gunpoint of two sports collectors in a Las Vegas hotel room that stemmed from a bungled attempt by Simpson to recover the memorabilia from the dealers in a room at the Palace Station Hotel and Casino.

Simpson's defense team argued during the trial that he was only trying to retrieve his own stolen property and he did not know an accomplice had brought a gun to the hotel room.

The star athlete-turned-actor was tried in the 1994 murders of Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ronald Goldman. Simpson was acquitted after a yearlong trial that was carried live gavel-to-gavel on U.S. television and transfixed much of the world.

Nevada's Supreme Court in 2010 refused to overturn O.J. Simpson's 2008 robbery conviction.

In that appeal his lawyers had argued that Clark County District Court Judge Jackie Glass failed to properly prevent the robbery and kidnapping trial from being tainted by Simpson's infamy from the murders or thoroughly screen the jury.

In the current case, a new team of lawyers was again seeking a new trial, this time citing incompetence by his trial attorney, according to the Las Vegas Review Journal.

Simpson, who is serving his sentence at Lovelock Correctional Center in northern Nevada, will be eligible for parole in 2017.

One of the many unbearable things about the internet is how we use certain words and phrases until they are completely void of any meaning at all. And, because it's the internet, the most insufferable trends stick around long after they're welcome.

Xolo Q2000 and Play T1000 release details for India trickle out

Xolo apparently has plans to introduce the Q2000 and the Play T1000 in India, seeing as a certain source has managed to render not only some of the smartphones? features, but also price details. Seemingly, both devices possess aspects that vastly vary from each other, but they may have been placed in more or less the same MRP range.

According to the reports, the Xolo Q2000 can be seen wrapping a 5.5-inch HD display which has been infused with IPS technology, while the Play T1000 has been estimated to house a 4.7-inch HD IPS OGs screen. By the looks of it, the manufacturer is visibly not happy just yet with its quad core contribution to the market, which is probably why it might have built these handsets with quad core processors too.

The chipset of the 5.5-inch phone may be clocked at 1.2GHz like most of its peers in this category are. A post on AndroidNova has counseled us to expect a probable MediaTek chipset. This expectation doesn?t seem totally out of bounds, considering that the Micromax Canvas HD was the first low-budget quad core smartphone bundled with this CPU and that the fact that the chipset maker lately announced its intentions to focus on the entry-level sector.

A 2,500mAh battery has supposedly reserved a seat for itself under the phone?s hood and it may be seen resting above a panel holding dual SIM slots. Rumor has it that the device has been graced with a 13MP camera featuring autofocus which has been positioned on the flip side, whereas its front parades a 2MP webcam. If that wasn?t enough to catch people?s attention, speculations are being made about a plausible Android 4.2 OS.

The 4.7-inch device is said to have been equipped with a quad core Tegra 3 processor which should pace at a clock speed of up to 1.5GHz. It will probably be launched only in the single SIM variant. As opposed to the aforementioned phone, this one should pack the former version of Android Jelly Bean and show off an 8MP camera on its rear panel. A 2,000mAh battery and 1GB of RAM have been rumored to follow the CPU into the gadget?s chassis.

Speculations are that the Xolo Q2000 will be emerging in India pegged at a price between Rs. 15,000 and Rs. 16,000. The post mentioned above has presented the Play T1000 with a tentative amount of Rs. 15,999 and has spoken of a probable May launch.

About 78,000 people have applied to become Red Planet colonists with the nonprofit organization Mars One since its application process opened on April 22, officials announced today (May 7). Mars One aims to land four people on the Red Planet in 2023 as the vanguard of a permanent colony, with more astronauts arriving every two years thereafter.

"With 78,000 applications in two weeks, this is turning out to be the most desired job in history," Mars One CEO and co-founder Bas Lansdorp?said in a statement. "These numbers put us right on track for our goal of half a million applicants."?

Mars One estimates that landing four settlers on Mars in 2023 will cost about $6 billion. The Netherlands-based organization plans to pay most of the bills by staging a global reality-TV event, with cameras documenting all phases of the mission from astronaut selection to the colonists' first years on the Red Planet.

The application process extends until Aug. 31. Anyone at least 18 years of age can apply, by submitting to the Mars One website a 1-minute video explaining his or her motivation to become a Red Planet settler. (You can also watch other applicants' videos at the site.)

Mars One charges an application fee, which ranges from $5 to $75 depending on the wealth of the applicant's home country. United States citizens pay $38, Lansdorp said.

When the application process closes, reviewers will pick 50 to 100 candidates from each of the 300 regions around the world that Mars One has identified. By 2015, this pool will be whittled down to a total of 28 to 40 candidates, officials said.

This core group will be split into groups of four, which will train for their one-way Mars mission for about seven years. Finally, an audience vote will pick one of these groups to be humanity's first visitors to the Red Planet.

So far, Mars One has received applications from more than 120 countries, officials said. The United States leads the way with 17,324, followed by China (10,241) and the United Kingdom (3,581). Russia, Mexico, Brazil, Canada, Colombia, Argentina and India round out the top 10.
