The charity bicycle tour Cops for Cancer were in South Delta Friday (Sept. 28) morning, visiting schools and raising awareness for the deadly disease.

The tour stopped at South Park elementary in Tsawwassen where the South Delta Leader took photographs of riders and school children.

Former South Park student Malcolm McQueen was on hand to hand out necklaces to the riders.

Malcolm, now a Grade 8 student at South Delta Secondary, says he was diagnosed with Neuroblastoma cancer when he was just two years old.

He's been cancer-free since 2004 and now works with the Canadian Cancer Society to help other people who going through treatment.

"I feel no one should really have to go through that," says Malcolm. "And I'll do my best to help."

Children with cancer receive bead necklaces while in hospital and the necklace grows as they receive their treatment, which is why the bicycle riders are given necklaces to demonstrate solidarity with those children.

The tour continued through Thrifty Foods in Tsawwassen, South Point Academy, and the Delta Police Department, before continuing to Langley, Abbotsford, Chilliwack and Hope tomorrow (Saturday).

Hooked! ? There would be no better way to describe my years of dependence on cigarettes. I had to have a cigarette. That is the way it was for me once upon a time. Smoking cigarettes is one of greatest mistakes I ever made.

It was the cool thing to do. Nobody I knew knew it was a deadly habit. People smoked around babies, in restaurants, in movie theaters, and even on public transportation. You smoked wherever you wanted. It seemed everybody smoked.

There was no such thing as second-hand smoke. It was unheard of. In the 1960?s people spent many hours in smoke filled rooms, whether they were smokers or not. If you were a smoker you would walk a country mile if you ran out of cigarettes and had no other way to get to a store. You were hooked.

Cigarette smokers will spend their last penny or beg for extra change if they run out of cigarettes. They will do just about anything to support their habit. Quitting is no simple matter, either. It could very well be one of the hardest things you do in your life. But it can be done.

I tried to quit for years. I just couldn?t do it, at the time, and continued to puff my life away. One day fate stepped in when an old friend I hadn?t heard from in years called. ?Just wanted to see how you were doing,? he said. The last time I saw him he was a 2-pack a day smoker.

?Guess what, I quit smoking, he continued ... been 4 years.? He said he was amazed that he had actually succeeded and that he had used sunflower seeds to do it. I thought that over for about a week before I went out and bought a nice big bag of sunflower seeds in the shells.

My friend explained that you have to get the sunflower seeds in the shell, not the shelled kind. You need the shells for the cracking and splitting activity ? it is something to do with your hands and your mouth. Cigarette smoking is an oral fixation. It supplies continuous hand-mouth activity.

NEW YORK (AP) ? A key witness against convicted child molester and former Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky, known in court papers as Victim 1, has a book deal and will soon reveal his identity, a publisher announced Thursday.

Ballantine Bantam Dell said that "Silent No More: Victim (hash)1's Fight for Justice Against Jerry Sandusky," is coming out Oct. 23. The memoir will be co-written by the victim's mother and psychologist and "will share how he survived years of shame and secrecy, harassment and accusation, before reporting Sandusky's actions to the authorities, and will offer a hopeful and inspiring message for victims of abuse," Ballantine announced.

Victim 1, now 18, will reveal his identity on the day of the book's release in an interview with ABC's Chris Cuomo.

Financial terms for the book were not disclosed. But Ballantine, an imprint of Random House Inc., plans a donation to a charity for victims of child abuse.

Victim 1 first alerted authorities in 2008 and helped launch the investigation leading to Sandusky's conviction in June on 45 counts of child sexual abuse. Prosecutors said some of the assaults took place on the Penn State campus. Sandusky is scheduled to be sentenced next month and is likely to receive a sentence that will keep him in prison for life.

Victim 1 testified for the prosecution that Sandusky approached him through a summer camp for youth sponsored by The Second Mile, a charity for at-risk youth that the former coach had founded. Their initial contacts consisted of football games and swimming, and Sandusky would attend the boy's wrestling tournaments.

Physical contact began with a hand on his leg in the car, Victim 1 said, and he began spending nights at the Sandusky home in State College, about 30 miles from his own home in Lock Haven.

Kissing and back rubbing during those overnight visits, when he was in his early teens, progressed to oral sex, he testified, sobbing. He said Sandusky eventually told him: "It's your turn."

"I don't how to explain it, I froze," he said. "My mind is telling me to move but I couldn't do it, I couldn't move."

He told jurors his own behavior worsened, going from a well-behaved child to fights with relatives and bed wetting. His grades deteriorated. After Victim 1 began trying to avoid Sandusky, he asked his mother about websites for child molesters, "to see if Jerry was on there," he testified.

His mother set up a meeting with school guidance counselors, a process that led to the opening of a police investigation and produced criminal charges against Sandusky in November. Messages seeking comment left Thursday for Victim 1's civil lawyers, Slade McLaughlin and Michael Boni, were not immediately returned.

Pap smear, prevention programs, vaccines contribute to declining incidence; national health care program needed

Researchers at Moffitt Cancer Center and colleagues at the University of South Florida and The Ohio State University have published a paper in the September issue of Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention that provides an overview on preventing invasive cervical cancer.

"The good news is that over the past several decades, the incidence of invasive cervical cancer has declined dramatically," said senior author Anna R. Giuliano, Ph.D., director of Moffitt's Center for Infection Research in Cancer and senior member of the Cancer Epidemiology Department. "The bad news is that 60 percent of invasive cervical cancers occur in women who are members of underserved racial or ethnic minorities, in women residing in rural areas or living in poverty."

The incidence of invasive cervical cancer has declined 75 percent since the 1940s. According to the authors, rates have decreased from 14.8 per 100,000 women in 1975 to 6.6 per 100,000 in 2008. Credit for the decline is given to the more widespread use of the Pap smear.

The number of current cases of invasive cervical cancer varies by race and ethnicity, geography, and socioeconomic status. For Hispanics, the incidence of invasive cervical cancer is 10.4 per 100,000, higher than any other group. Among blacks 85 and older, the incidence is three times higher than white women in the same age group.

"In looking across the nation, there are geographic and socioeconomic disparities associated with invasive cervical cancer rates," noted lead author Christine M. Pierce Campbell, Ph.D., a postdoctoral fellow within Moffitt's Cancer Epidemiology Department. "Along the U.S.-Mexico border, in the deep South and in Appalachia, rates are higher than in other regions of the nation. Also, many studies have shown that socioeconomic status predicts who gets screened, diagnosed and treated for invasive cervical cancer, regardless of race and ethnicity."

Giuliano, Pierce Campbell and their co-authors also note that federal and local funding of prevention programs, such as the National Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program, the only nationwide screening program, has helped reduce incidence. Although the National Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program was implemented to promote screening among high-risk and low-income women, the program has historically served few of the women eligible for the service. The numbers of those taking advantage of the service vary by state, but between 2004 and 2006, only 8.7 percent of women eligible for screening received it, the authors said.

Human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination, now in two forms, could also reduce incidence, the authors said. GARDASIL, the first HPV vaccine targeting females ages 9 to 26 to prevent invasive cervical cancer, was released in 2006. It was followed by the CERVARIX vaccine, which is targeted to females 10 to 25.

However, HPV vaccine use lags behind other adolescent vaccines, Giuliano said.

"Barriers to HPV vaccination include costs, perceived safety issues, and the perception that vaccination is unnecessary if the woman or child is not sexually active," Pierce Campbell said. "Parental knowledge, attitudes and beliefs influence utilization, as well. Physician recommendation of the HPV vaccine is a key factor to its use, yet many primary care physicians have not been proactive in promoting it, especially to young adolescents in the target age groups."

Because HPV infection in men contributes to HPV infection in women and the subsequent development of invasive cervical cancer, an additional strategy to reduce incidence has been the HPV vaccination of males, the authors said.

"Gender-neutral HPV vaccination would result in maximal disease reduction," they wrote. "Universal HPV vaccination has the potential to reduce the incidence of invasive cervical cancer and its precancerous lesions by 91 percent."

"Invasive cervical cancer can be eliminated in the United States," concluded the authors. "To achieve this goal, we need to adopt a comprehensive national health care program that underscores accessible and equitable health care, one that delivers compassionate care to all. A future without invasive cervical cancer is possible, although we must be innovative and vigilant in our approach to reduce its burden, as well as reduce the disparities in access to screening and overcome the obstacles to vaccination."

There was "a vigorous flow on the surface of?Mars," said chief scientist John Grotzinger of the California Institute of Technology. "We're really excited about this."

The discovery did not come as a complete surprise. NASA decided to plunk Curiosity down inside Gale Crater near the Martian equator because photos from space hinted that the spot possessed a watery past. The six-wheeled rover safely landed Aug. 5 after a nail-biting plunge through the Martian atmosphere. It's on a two-year, $2.5 billion mission to study whether the Martian environment could have been favorable for microbial life.

Present day?Mars?is a frozen desert with no hint of water on its radiation-scarred surface, but geological studies of rocks by previous missions suggest the planet was warmer and wetter once upon a time.

The latest evidence came from photos that Curiosity took revealing rounded pebbles and gravel ? a sign that the rocks were transported long distances by water and smoothed out.

The size of the rocks ? ranging from a sand grain to a golf ball ? indicates that they could not have been carried by wind, said mission scientist Rebecca Williams of the Planetary Science Institute in Tucson, Ariz.

Though Curiosity did not use its high-tech instruments to drill into the rocks or analyze their chemical makeup, Grotzinger said scientists were sure that water played a role based on just studying the pictures.

It's unclear how long the water persisted on the surface, but it easily could have lasted "thousands to millions of years," said mission scientist Bill Dietrich of the University of California, Berkeley.

Curiosity chanced upon the dried-up streambed while driving to Glenelg, an intriguing spot where three types of terrain meet. Its ultimate destination is Mount Sharp, a mountain rising from the center of crater floor, but it was not expected to travel there until the end of the year.

Finding past water is a first step toward learning whether the environment could have supported microbes. Scientists generally agree that besides water and an energy source such as the sun, organic carbon is a necessary prerequisite for life.

While an ancient streambed holds promise as a potentially habitable environment, scientists don't think it's a good place to preserve the carbon building blocks of life. That's why the rover will continue its trek to the foothills of Mount Sharp where there's a better chance of finding organics.

(Update) Is Berlin Too Dependent on Property Taxes? - in Berlin Patch

Connecticut?s 169 municipalities have gotten little increased financial help from the state in the last five years and remain overly dependent on state aid, the Connecticut Conference of Municipalities says.

CCM, the main lobbying group for local communities, released a bulletin Monday to candidates for the state?s General Assembly urging them to make education funding a priority in the coming year, according to the Connecticut Mirror.

Berlin's Residential Taxes are: $1,569,598,972, while Commercial/Industrial taxes are: $424,708,500 for a Total Real Property Grand List of $1,994,307,472.

This shows that 21.3 percent of the grand list value relates to commercial/industrial property and 78.7 percent related to residential.

In Berlin, the town has a tax rate of 25.15 barely up from 24.5 mills. But unlike other towns, Berlin was frugal and cautious in budgeting for state funds.

School-related state funding: Total budget: $7,125,031: Total actual: $7,079,650. A shortfall of $45,381.

Non-school related state funding: Total budget: $786,359: Total actual: $1,094,085. A surplus of $307,726

"The large positive variance is entirely due to one specific grant called Manufacturers Machinery and Equipment (MME)," Berlin Finance Director James Wren said. "In fiscal year 2011, the state substantially reduced this grant. During the fiscal year 2012 budget process, while the Governor?s budget was also going on, there was a lot of uncertainty about the fate of? that grant. The Town budgeted only $435,000 for that grant based on what was known at the time and to avoid over budgeting revenue.

"However, the when the state budget was finalized, the state created a Municipal Revenue Sharing grant (basically the Town?s share of some of the new state taxes) as a replacement for the MME grant. In addition, the state still provided some funds for the original MME grant. As a result, this actually came in at $793,163 which was almost $360K more than budgeted."

State aid for towns overall stands at about $3 billion per year, while Connecticut?s 169 towns collectively raise about $9 billion annually from local property taxes, James Finley, CCM?s executive director, told the Mirror. State aid to towns has remained relatively flat over the last five years. When you factor in the rate of inflation, that means towns have actually lost financial ground during that five-year period, Finley added.

The state aid figures represent an over-dependence by towns on local property taxes, something the General Assembly should address by closing shortfalls in education funding to towns, Finley said.

"The key to property tax relief is education finance reform," Finley told the Mirror. "The overdependence on the property tax is unsustainable, and hometown Connecticut is in desperate need of revenue assistance."

EU Commission Publishes Plan to Drive Business, Government ...

The European Commission detailed its new strategy to use cloud computing technologies to drive European business and government productivity.

The European Commission announced on Thursday details regarding its new strategy to use cloud computing technologies to drive European business and government productivity.

Though the European cloud computing field is currently experiencing significant growth, it is still relatively behind North American standards due to its different geopolitical characteristics and compliancy issues.

The EU recently funded the open source project OPTIMIS, which provides European service providers with a free toolkit to help build and run applications in the cloud.

The strategy for ?unleashing the potential of cloud computing in Europe? outlines steps to ultimately achieve a net gain of 2.5 million new European jobs, and an annual boost of EUR 160 billion to EU GDP by 2020.

The commission published a report that provides quantitative estimates of the financial impact of increasing cloud computing adoption in Europe, along with the likely barriers to uptake.

The strategy is designed to speed up and increase the use of cloud computing across the economy.

At a press conference held Thursday in Brussels, EU Commissioner for Digital Agenda Neelie Kroes told reporters that a large group of measures had already been taken to establish trust among users in cloud computing, as well as to jumpstart the European economy.

?Cloud computing is a game-changer for our economy. Without EU action, we will stay stuck in national fortresses and miss out on billions in economic gains,? said Kroes. ?We must achieve critical mass and a single set of rules across Europe. We must tackle the perceived risks of cloud computing head-on,? she told reporters.?

Kroes said the goal of the initiative is to not just to make Europe more ?cloud-friendly?, but rather, ?cloud active?.

The EU stands to gain a lot from an overall increase in cloud adoption. Small businesses will be able to provide a more convenient, tailored, flexible, and affordable service, while integrated public services could boost efficiency and reduce taxpayer cost, said Kroes.

The European Commission is currently taking three steps to boost confidence in cloud adoption.

The first step revolves around implementing standards and certification to help users evaluate and compare services, and know which ones to trust.

The second is to provide full transparency within contracts regarding how data is used in the cloud and liability issues so that users will know the contracts are safe and fair.

And finally, the last step is the launch of a new European cloud partnership in an effort to harness the public sector?s buying power, influence the emerging cloud market and ensure more efficient, effective e-government services.

The commission has already proposed a single set of data protection rules for Europe, and plans to propose a European strategy for cyber security in a few months.

?Europe needs to think big. The cloud strategy will enhance trust in innovative computing solutions and boost a competitive digital single market where Europeans feel safe,? said Viviane Reding, European Commissioner for Justice, Fundamental rights & citizenship. ?That means a swift adoption of the new data protection framework which the Commission proposed earlier this year and the development of safe and fair contract terms and conditions.?

CHICAGOIn today's fast-paced society, consumers often reach for nutrition bars when looking for a healthy on-the-go snack. A new study in the September issue of the Journal of Food Science published by the Institute of Food Technologists (IFT) found that partially replacing canola oil with fish oil in nutrition bars can provide the health benefits of omega-3 fatty acids without affecting the taste.

Producers have been hesitant to incorporate fish oil into foods because it tends to give off a fishy taste or smell, therefore requiring additional processing steps to eliminate these unwanted qualities. In the study, four levels of fish oil were evaluated to determine consumer acceptance of fish-oil fortified nutrition bars. The results showed that oat and soy-based nutrition bars fortified with the lowest replacement level (20 percent) of fish oil did not affect consumer acceptance or purchase intent.

Omega-3 fatty acids from fish oil are known to lower triglyceride levels and may help with rheumatoid arthritis.

Japan?s Recruit Co. Acquires Indeed.com To Extend Jobs Reach From US To Asia

Amid all the recent brouhaha over why Craigslist has failed to improve for so long (in part leading to frustrated developers building things) the entire classifieds market continues to chug along in its various guises. One of those is the more formal recruitment industry - and today Recruit Co. Ltd, a provider of HR and information services based in Japan, has acquired Indeed.com, a highly trafficked jobs site best known in North America. Terms were not disclosed but given that there were signs Indeed was planning to IPO, the price may well have been close to $1bn. Co-founders Paul Forster and Rony Kahan are staying on in the new guise.

This post has been updated following a conversation with Indeed's CEO and co-founder, Paul Forster.

Indeed, a job search giant and one of the New York City area's biggest startups, has been acquired by Japanese company, Recruit Co. Ltd.

The acquisition price wasn't announced but you can bet it was for close to, if not more than, $1 billion. A source close to the company tells us Indeed is worth between $750 million and $1 billion, and the profitable company had discussed going public.

When we asked Indeed's CEO and co-founder Paul Forster about the acquisition price, he stated: "It was a very attractive offer. It was a very exciting outcome for shareholders and employees and everyone involved in the business." He also noted that his company has been profitable since 2007 and it's the #1 source of hires in the United States.

Recruit's offer does seem like it was lucrative for all parties involved. In a recent New York Times SEC filing, the media company stated that its investment in Forster's company netted it $100 million.

Founded in 2004, Indeed has more than 550 employees. Indeed has 80 million monthly uniques and it works with more than 25,000 advertisers.? Half of its traffic is international. More than 1 million resumes are added to Indeed every month.?

When Business Insider visited the company in February it only had 360 people on its payroll and 60 million monthly uniques.

Its revenue is growing quickly too. We're told Indeed will generate about $150 million this year and will net about $25 million with revenues growing 30% per year.

Recruit, its acquirer, has 22,000 employees and $10 billion in annual revenue. Forster says the two companies began discussions about six months ago, in early March.

What's most amazing about the acquisition is that Indeed's entire billion-dollar operation was almost entirely bootstrapped. Co-founders Paul Forster and Rony Kahan only took $5 million from Union Square Ventures, Allen & Co and The New York Times Company, and even then they didn't really need the outside capital.

"They had bootstrapped the company, launched the service, and were well on their way. They didn't need our money. But eventually we convinced them to take it," USV's Fred Wilson writes.

"We've been very capital efficient," Forster tells Business Insider. "Part of our ethos has been to be very, very efficient and hire the right people at the right time. We've also been laser focused on building the most relevant job search company. Monetizing that has been very successful." Indeed was the first auction-based, pay-per-click recruitment advertising service.

Indeed is not the first successful company Forster and Kahan founded together. In the early 2000's the former finance professionals founded jobsinthemoney. Their company was acquired in 2003 by Financial News.

So what happened to Indeed's IPO plans?

"We had the alternative option to go public and we were advised by Morgan Stanley in the deal," says Forster. "All the indications were that we would have had a successful IPO if we had chosen to go that route. But this was a very compelling offer."
