Nakheel profit up 36% as Dubai property recovers

Dubai real estate developer Nakheel on Monday posted a first half net profit of $208.8 million, up 36.5 percent compared with the same period of 2011, saying it reflected a recovery in the sector.

Net profit came in at 767 million dirhams ($208.8 million dollars, 170.3 million euros) for the six months to June 30 compared with 562 million dirhams in 2011, Nakheel said in a statement.

Revenues were 31 billion dirhams in the first half thanks to the sale of many real estate units, amounting to an annual rise of 112 percent, according to the statement.

Nakheel underwent a restructuring programme after Dubai's property bubble burst in 2009, concluding the process in August last year.

Before the crisis struck, it had borrowed heavily to finance its projects, including iconic palm-shaped man-made islands off the coast of the Gulf emirate.

"The financial performance is reflective of the continuous support and commitment made by the government of Dubai and the board of directors of Nakheel to implement a sustainable business strategy for the medium to long term and largely due to better cost and cash management," it said.

"The positive results... following from the robust financial results achieved in the year 2011 are reflective of the strong growth in the real estate market in Dubai where Nakheel is a dominant player and will continue to strengthen its position with the passage of time."

Why The Open Cloud Wins And Oracle Loses When IT Gets Virtualized

oraclelogoOracle said today they have bought a company called Xsigo that leverages the growing popularity of a new form of technology that virtualizes the network. It's called software defined networking (SDN) and it is shaking up the way we view IT and the cloud. The acquisition points to a shift in the market that will eventually make Oracle the loser. The cloud is opening up while Oracle is folding inward. Network virtualization is serving as a catalyst for a federated infrastructure that will make the open cloud more viable for an organization than a vertically integrated stack that needs to be managed by teams of IT engineers. ?Oracle is rejecting that premise and will use Xsigo to strengthen its own proprietary environment.

91% I Wish

All Critics (48) | Top Critics (18) | Fresh (43) | Rotten (4)

What's so remarkable about the happiness the film brings is its simplicity.

What a kind and wise movie this is.

[The] film is built around performances by two real-life brothers who are as unaffected, spirited and lovable as I can imagine, and one of the pleasures of "I Wish" is simply spending time with them.

Transforms the commonplace into the extraordinary.

It's about the wonders of everyday life, and of childhood imagination.

The sort of small film of real consequence that, as a kid, I remember seeing and completely losing myself in: That was my life.

A film that's both entertaining and illuminating, no matter your age.

Like a train, "I Wish" is slow to build momentum, then it carries us away in a wondrous rush.

You watch it remembering the days when you should have walked but simply had to run, and when you believed that, if you wished hard enough, your dead pet just might come back again.

Despite its youthful perspective on adult concerns, the feature generates a few profound moments of basic need in the midst of an atypical men-on-a-mission film.

The lives of the children in "I Wish" seem to be expanding in front of our eyes, as evidenced by their changing wishes, which become bigger and more beautiful as their plan proceeds.

A flurry of details that reveal a grand canvas of love and loyalty if we take a step back.

A film that moves a bit too slowly for its own good but has remarkable cumulative strength by its emotional finale.

At its worst, I Wish is static. At its best, it has the warmth and subtlety of classic Asian works by Edward Yang and Yasujiro Ozu.

Koreeda's like a modern Ozu, documenting the trickle down effect of global economic changes on once strongly held traditions of Japanese family life.

Wistful, light and sweet.

A lovely, authentic exploration of family bonds tested by separation. Though the film is overlong at 128 minutes, it is a warm and wise winner.

If the Dardenne brothers were Japanese instead of French-Belgian, or perhaps set out to craft a homage to Yasujiro Ozu that was crossed with a whimsical yet melancholic version of The Parent Trap, it might well resemble this.

Rod Graves, Ken WhisenhuntAP

Fans are naturally more interested in players and coaches than front-office employees.

But in Arizona, the intrigue over the firing of a salary cap administrator creates questions about the direction of the franchise and its leadership.

On its face, getting rid of Justin Casey is a line of agate type, the kind of transaction no one notices. But inside Cardinal headquarters, it has apparently created a bit of a divide.

Kent Somers of the Arizona Republic reports the move was ?deeply felt inside the team?s headquarters in Tempe,? and could hint at a split between General Manager Rod Graves and coach Ken Whisenhunt.

Somers said it would be ?hard to find a Cardinals employee more well-liked by his co-workers? than Casey, and there was no previous sense he was bad at his job.?But he was also close with Whisenhunt, as the two occasionally played golf together.

Was that the reason he was fired, as a power play by Graves?

?That?s ridiculous,? Graves told Somers, when asked about the speculation. ?Ken and I have a wonderful working relationship, and we?re on the same page in respect to improving as an organization, improving as a team and working together.?

Casey himself declined comment to Somers, and Graves didn?t elaborate on why he was replaced. There were other moves made in the front office as well, so perhaps it was part of a larger organizational shift.

Casey was replaced by Sean Castle, a CPA with no NFL experience.

?Our focus is on being a championship organization and becoming a championship team,? Graves said. ?Every year in that quest, I?m evaluating where we are, from a personnel standpoint, and assessing new talent out there.

?What I have been able to do in assessing candidates is really get a feel for the skill sets people have and realize what services they can provide us that we don?t have. And sometimes at the end of that evaluation, you come to the conclusion that you?re better off making changes.?

That?s all well and good, and there could easily be a reason for all this. But when moves like this are made without full explanation, the vacuum quickly fills with conspiracy theories. Whether there?s a Graves-Whisenhunt split or not, the impression does no good for the organization, and barring evidence to the contrary, folks will begin to believe it whether it?s true or not.

Girl found safe in Ohio after 3 shot dead in Penn. home

QUINCY, Pa. (AP) ? A man in south-central Pennsylvania confronting his wife about custody arrangements for their daughter shot to death three people, then fled with the 4-year-old girl before the two were found about 250 miles away in Ohio, authorities said Saturday.

Kevin Matthew Cleeves was trying to contact his wife Friday to make arrangements to pick up his daughter Leia, but she didn't answer the phone, so he went to a home in Quincy Township, the (Waynesboro) Record-Herald (http://bit.ly/O5EeFX) reported, citing court records.

Police said Cleeves, 35, found a woman and man sitting in a car and began arguing with them, then was ordered to leave. He then shot to death both of them and another woman and took the girl, authorities alleged.

An Amber Alert was issued Friday night but was canceled hours later after the pair were found in Austintown in northeastern Ohio, outside Youngstown.

Cleeves was arrested in the three deaths Friday night in Quincy Township, Pennsylvania state police Trooper Adam Reed. Police had said earlier that Cleeves should be considered "armed and dangerous as well as suicidal." Cleeves was charged with three counts of criminal homicide Saturday, according to court records.

Reed would not give other information about the deaths, including the names of the victims and their relationship to Cleeves, but said more details would be released later Saturday. Court records did not list an attorney for Cleeves.

Great Britain's Mark Cavendish misses out on ... - BBC World News

Mark Cavendish?s hopes of winning Olympic gold in the men?s road race ended in disappointment after he finished well off the pace on Saturday. Great Britain?s Mark Cavendish (right) was pre-race favourite but finished well back in the field. (Picture: Getty) In the closing stretch on The Mall, 2000 Olympic silver medallist Alexander Vinikourov of Kazakhstan pounced to beat Colombia?s Rigoberto Uran for the gold medal, with bronze going to Norway?s Alexander Kristoff. The Great Britain team did well until the final quarter of the race, when they were caught by the field, and once Chris Froome ran out of gas, world champion Cavendish had just three Great Britain team-mates to try and keep him at the front of the field. The finale took another twist as Switzerland?s Fabian Cancellara collided with a crash barrier after coming out of Richmond Park, while another major contender, Belgium?s Tom Boonen, fell off the pace. But around Putney High Street Uran and Vinikourov broke clear of the field and began a game of cat and mouse for the race to the finish line on The Mall, with the Kazakhstan rider timing his burst to perfection as he charged up the right-hand side of the road to power home for victory.

PFT: Harbaugh says SF has 5 No. 1 receivers

Father-and-Son

With defensive coordinator Gregg Williams suspended indefinitely and no other person holding the title even on an interim basis and with the Rams putting on the pads Sunday for the first time in the Jeff Fisher era, an important question remains.

Who?s running the defense?

The coaching staff has three men who have held the ?defensive coordinator? title at the NFL level:? Fisher, assistant head coach Dave McGinnis, and secondary coach Chuck Cecil.

But the defense being installed is the Gregg Williams defense.? So who?s in best position to actually implement it?

It?s possibly linebackers coach Blake Williams.? As in the son of Gregg Williams.

Linebacker James Laurinaitis recently explained that, to date, it?s been a committee approach when it comes to coaching the defense.? But the only coach Laurinaitis mentioned by name was Blake Williams.

?A different [day] in practice it?ll be a different guy calling the plays,? Laurinaitis told 92.3 The Fan in Cleveland, via SportsRadioInterviews.com.? ?We have Blake Williams, Gregg Williams? son, and he kind of grew up in this defense.? It?s safe to say that on some of the modifications of Gregg Williams? defense over the years has been because of Blake and his intelligence.?

And here?s where a cynic would wonder, as some in league circles have, whether Blake Williams will be serving as a surrogate for Gregg Williams in 2012.? Yeah, Gregg Williams is suspended and he can?t talk to anyone from the team.? But he surely can talk to his own son ? and unless the league office will be monitoring those communications, Gregg Williams can share thoughts with his son regarding how his son is doing his job.

In theory, father and son also can get together from time to time.? Dinner, for example, once or twice a week.? Absent supervision from 345 Park Avenue, what?s to keep them from working to put together a game plan for the upcoming game?

We?re not saying it will happen.? And we take no position on whether it would be justified by the league?s arguable overreaction to the Saints? pay-for-performance system.

The point is that, with no one identified as the interim defensive coordinator and with the son of the defensive coordinator on the coaching staff, the Rams (if everyone is discreet) can still find a way to get the benefit of Gregg Williams? insights, ideas, and strategies.

ChannelTrends: Revenue Comes from the Exponents

There?s one key reason that VoIP solutions of the past were slow to gain traction in many markets: they were often presented as a simple and cost-effective replacement systems for traditional phone service. While the traditional early adopters and some of those implementing new service were willing to make the leap, there wasn?t a real value proposition for others to make a switch. If current phone services were working well, few businesses were willing to experiment with something as critical as their communications systems. The incentives just weren?t there.

To motivate buyers, there has to be a real value proposition, other than ?try this, it?s new.? Steve Jobs and Apple proved that with the iPhone, offering an easy-to-use platform, combining Internet access, a mobile phone, a music player and, most importantly, applications that were useful and/or entertaining. Buyers responded in droves, and each new version has consumers clamoring to own one first.

The same principle that makes the iPhone so successful is what makes UC (unified communications) so valuable to the business community. Rather than an equal exchange of a landline for a Web-enabled phone, these systems become true collaborative platforms for an organization?s communications and business processes. With the right design and integration services, UC creates exponential value for the users, allowing business users to leverage a number of complementary applications and databases to maximize the value of client and prospect discussions.

UC solutions may start out with a variety of voice-related applications, such as VoIP,?presence information, video conferencing, interactive whiteboards,?speech recognition and?unified messaging?(integrated?voicemail,?e-mail,?SMS?and?fax). A well-designed and properly implemented system will improve a business? call time metrics and, more importantly, maximize their overall user experience and operational efficiencies. Of course, the collaboration value increases when the solution is integrated with a company?s CRM and adds features such as a central management portal and reporting/analytics capabilities.

Success Requires a New Approach

Like many of today?s IT services practices, to be successful in unified communications, providers must be able to master solution selling. That requires a consultative approach with each client, designing the most effective and efficient platform that meets their specific business goals, and convincing the key decision makers that its benefits are well worth the investment.

How does a solution provider build a viable UC practice and ensure their team has the skills needed to support their customers? future growth needs? That lofty goal is a frequent discussion among members of the CompTIA Unified Communications Community, a group focused on the building best practices, business fundamental education and other resources for companies involved in this quickly growing technology segment of the IT channel. They?ll meet face-to-face at on Monday at CompTIA?s Breakaway conference to share the latest research and develop key initiatives to advance UC opportunities for solution providers and their partners, and to review the educational resources they?ve be instrumental in creating. The meeting agenda is packed with UC-related topics, including:

 • Roll-out of an industry road map,
 • A standards consultant presentation,
 • An update on philanthropy,
 • A Trustmark advisory presentation,
 • An education update,
 • VAR/agent partnering research and
 • A community Wiki presentation and discussion.

The event features several of the group?s efforts, including a session that details the opportunities and issues solution providers face when building a new practice. The CompTIA Quick Start to Unified Communications workshop will walk attendees through the requirements for launching a unified communications practice, including actionable steps and best practices developed by experienced industry professionals.

In case you miss the discussions at Breakaway, the CompTIA Unified Community meets monthly (via a combination of conference calls and live discussions) and welcomes new members anytime. Or you can just enjoy and employ the tools and resources they?ve assembled to ensure greater UC success in the channel. To join or learn more about the group, contact communities@comptia.org.

Farmers in Western Tennessee hit hard by extreme drought

A drought is now gripping more than half of the nation, with the latest U.S. Drought Monitor showing some of the worst areas are expanding. In Tennessee, crops are dying and families are struggling to face the losses. NBC's Thanh Truong reports.

By Thanh Truong, NBC News

BRIGHTON, TENN. -- Times are tough in Tennessee. David McDaniel and his twins look out on their farm fields and see row upon row of withering crops.

"It's hard to know before we harvest but it's going to be at least a 50 percent loss, maybe more," said McDaniel, who still owes tens of thousands of dollars for farm equipment and land. The crops would have helped his family stay out of debt.

Thursday?s Drought Monitor report shows ?widespread intensification? in the central U.S. ?Throughout the country areas in the worst drought categories rose by 50 percent. ?And in parts of western Tennessee, the drought is categorized as either "extreme" or "severe."

And as farmer Clay Kelley explained, the anticipated crop loss is felt by the entire community.

"When folks get a good crop, everybody gets a new pickup truck. There's not going to be many new pickup trucks running this year," he said.

As times get tougher farmers are more likely to hold on to what they have than buy new vehicles.?

"Truck sales are about 50 percent of our business and I would say right now, the way things are going, we are probably looking at a 20 percent decrease in sales towards the fall," said Daniel Allen, sales manager at Country Chevrolet in Brighton, Tenn.

The potential financial losses are mounting, but so is something less visible: stress. David McDaniel's wife, Lisa McDaniel, sees the weight of worry on her husband. As a farmer?s wife she's somewhat used to that. But this time around her 28-year-old twin sons are involved. Their corn, soybean and cotton crops are struggling. This is their first experience with a brutal drought.

"I worry. They're not little anymore but I still worry," Lisa McDaniel said. ?"I know what David and I have been through but I don't want that on them at all. Now they're going through it, and now they're starting their families and they're going to see what it's like; they're going to realize it. They haven't experienced a bad year. It's scary."

Her son Jeffrey McDaniel has a two-year-old son and another on the way. He and his wife Caroline McDaniel were planning to finish their first house and move in, but that's on hold until they have a better grasp on what the fields will yield. Debt is his biggest worry.

"It's in the back of my mind all the time, not being able to pay back what I owe," said Jeffrey.

His wife does what she can to help.

"I try and remind him not to worry even though that's a really hard thing to do. And just tell him that I have my income coming in and that helps and if I need to work more, I will,? said Caroline, who has a part-time job as a dental hygienist. ?We've been going to church, a lot, saying lot of prayers."

Those prayers revolve around rain.

U.S. to let Myanmar import ban expire, at least temporarily

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A U.S. ban on imports from Myanmar was set to expire, at least temporarily, at the end of September because of a clash between lawmakers over funding for an African trade provision.

The two issues are tied together in a bill that has the backing of the Obama administration and that lawmakers hope to pass before their month long August recess.

The White House has eased some sanctions on Myanmar, also known by its colonial name of Burma, in response to economic and political reforms. It does not favor lifting the import ban yet.

Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell proposed separating the two measures so the ban on imports from Myanmar could be renewed.

But Senate Finance Committee Chairman Max Baucus, a Democrat, objected on the grounds that it would jeopardize approval of the African trade measure, which he said was vital to clothing industry jobs on the continent.

He rejected McConnell's charge that Democrats were turning renewal of sanctions on Myanmar "into a partisan issue" after years of strong support from both parties.

Baucus said he hoped to worked with Senator Tom Coburn, an Oklahoma Republican, in coming days to address his concerns about funding for the African trade provision.

The African Growth and Opportunity Act, first passed by Congress in 2000, allows eligible countries in sub-Saharan Africa to ship thousands of goods to the United States without paying import duties.

A provision that expires September 30 waives duties on clothing from most African Growth and Opportunity Act countries, even if the yarn or fabric is made in a "third country" like China, South Korea or Vietnam.

Coburn has objected to the use of U.S. Customs Service user fees spread out over 10 years to pay for the $200 million cost of the trade bill.

Those are the types of provisions that have created a huge mountain of U.S. government debt, he said.

The A-Z of Internet Marketing Terms (Part I) | ArtDriver

The A-Z of Internet Marketing TermsWhether you are a new starter at an SEO company or a small business trying to reach your customers online, the world of Internet marketing can be a complex and confusing place. This glossary has been put together in an effort to provide clear and concise definitions to some of those tricky terms you hear banded around but are unsure of. So take a read of this resource and dazzle your clients, colleagues and customers with your new found online marketing expertise!

Alt Tags

An alt tag is the text that appears when you hover your mouse over an image. Alt tags are an important practice because the search engines do not see a page as we do; they see it in HTML code (don?t worry we will be covering this later!). By creating an alt tag you are telling the search engines exactly what the image is displaying, helping them to categorise the image and understand what the page is all about.

Backlinks

In short, backlinks are the links showcased on other websites that direct the user back to your site. You may be familiar with the term ?link building? which is essentially the process of creating links within articles, infographics or other content and offering this content to another site on the condition that they include the link. This process is important because it helps the search engines to gauge the credibility of your site based on the quality and quantity of your bank link profile.

CMS

CMS stands for content management system, and this is the system you choose to be able to publish, delete and amend content on your website. Some of the most popular CMS systems include WordPress, Drupal and Joomla, because of the fact they are open-source (free) and incredibly user friendly.

Domaining

Your domain is the name you have chosen to give your website. For instance, the domain name for Link-Assistant.com?s domain name is link-assistant.com. Domaining is the process of buying domain names deemed desirable with a view to selling them on for profit. The .com domains are considered to have the highest value although .net and .org can also fetch a high price provided the rest of the domain name is competitive. One of the most expensive domain names at present is insure.com.

Ecommerce

If you or one of your clients wishes to have an online shop, then the site will need to be ecommerce in order for somebody to be able to purchase online. A common sign that a site is ecommerce is an ?add to basket? or ?shopping cart? feature. Check out our blog post on the on-page SEO for ecommerce.

Forums

A forum is the term used to describe a place online where people can discuss a certain topic and others can use it to find information. Forums can be a great source of information but be careful not to take everything as gospel as they are typically opinion based and if you are going to contribute yourself then do so wisely.

Gravatar

A gravatar is a globally recognised avatar (what?s an avatar I hear you cry?!). An avatar is a graphical representation that will appear by your content online, showcased on sites that decide they want an image to display by your work. An avatar could be a graphic that represents your business or it could be a photo of yourself. To get your gravatar, go to https://en.gravatar.com.

HTML

HTML is short for HyperText Markup Language, and this is the main language used in order to display content in a web browser. It might look a little confusing, but getting to grips with the basics such as how to create a header and how to make a link is really quite easy and there are plenty of online guides to help you further your understanding of various HTML elements.

Inbound Links

The term inbound links is a relatively new term that simply describe the aforementioned backlinks. This serves to demonstrate how difficult it can be to get to grips with the basics of internet marketing, but knowing which terms overlap is half the battle!

JPEG

This is a file format used to compress images without losing the quality of them and is the most common file format for transmitting photos on the web.

Keywords

If you wanted to look for information about cats on the internet, you would most likely type ?cats? into the search engine so that it can deliver the most relevant results. ?Cats? is the keyword in this scenario, so when it comes to choosing keywords for internet marketing purposes, it?s important to think of what you want your business to be found for and what potential customers are likely to type in as this will give you the best chance of being found online for the right reasons.

Landing Page

This is the first page a person will land on after clicking through from a link somewhere else; be it on a search engine results page or other advertisement. Any page of your site has the potential to be a landing page, including your homepage.

Meta Descriptions

When you type in a keyword and those sites relevant to your search appear on the search engine results page (SERP), you will notice that underneath the link to the site there is a snippet of text; this is known as the meta description. If you do not create custom meta descriptions, the search engine will take a section of the text from the page to use which might not be the best text for showcasing your business. Editing your meta descriptions to provide a punchy sentence describing the content of the page can make a big difference to the amount of people clicking through to your site.

This resource has been designed to be referred back to time and time again; a cheat sheet for new marketers and businesses alike. In part two, we will be discussing outbound links, pay per click and much more so be sure to stop back for the second instalment in a couple of days!

Greenwich Homes for Sale Jupiter Florida Real Estate | Virtual ...

Buying a new home in Greenwich has become rather arduous mainly due to the ever expanding range of houses in the area. It is thus difficult for a first time home buyer to make the right choice. The process has also been made difficult by the increasing number of real estate companies in the area. Most of these companies are only interested in making a buck. Thus you need to be careful when you are choosing your real estate agent in Greenwich. There are important factors you should consider when you are hiring an agent to help you purchase the Greenwich homes for sale Jupiter, Florida.

First of all, you need to trust your guts. There are so many real estate agents in Greenwich that are untrustworthy. You may find an agent who appears competent and has enormous marketing plans, but if your intuition doesn?t like him just ignore him. Remember, by hiring the realtor you adopt them into your life, so you need to be sure that their personality is impeccable. The main aim of hiring an agent is to represent you during the purchasing process. Therefore the person you choose should be able to represent you accordingly. You need someone who can be entrusted with the job of buying a house in Greenwich.

You can also find the right real estate agent by interviewing a couple of them. Once you have limited your hunt to a couple of agents, arrange individual appointments to evaluate them in person. This will give you an opportunity to compare their competencies before you can make your final decision. Make sure to ask them for their credentials and licenses. A good real estate agent should have all the necessary documents to support his services. Feel free to ask them any question you deem important. It is also important to check the experience of your real estate agent. The more experienced they are the more capable they are to offer reliable and effective services. These agents are supposed to give you the best results in the shortest period. So always go for someone who knows how to attract more customers and close deals successfully.

Your real estate agent should be someone who listens to your preferences and offers the necessary advice accordingly. Some agents in Jupiter Florida are so desirous to make sales that they end up ignoring your needs and buy you a house that clearly isn?t appropriate for you. So choose someone who is willing to pay attention to you and give you the necessary assistance, but won?t push and patronize you. Every agent can make a list of prices and await the house to sell. But good real estate agents know that the buyer?s impression is important than the price. They know how to choose the right Greenwich houses for sale Jupiter Florida.

Robert Duvall Hosts Ann Romney Fundraiser

From Sarah Jessica Parker to George Clooney, it's Barack Obama who usually fundraises with celebrities, but the president no longer has the star market cornered. Actor Robert Duvall and his wife, Luciana, will host a fundraiser featuring Ann Romney at their Middleburg, Va., home in September.

National Journal has a copy of the invitation, and the general reception tickets to the Sept. 6event are $2,500 per person while the VIP photo reception is $10,000 donated or raised per person. A $25,000 donation will get you into the dinner.

The Academy Award-winning actor, well known for roles in "Apocalypse Now" and "To Kill a Mockingbird," among many others, is a longtime supporter of the Republican Party.

Duvall, 81, also famously starred in "The Natural," coincidentally one of the primary-night campaign songs used by Romney's primary rival, Rick Santorum.

Philippines' human rights commission to investigate mass grave found by military

MANILA, Philippines - The Philippines' human rights commission said Monday that it would investigate a report by the military that it has exhumed a mass grave containing at least 30 suspected victims of a 1980s communist rebel purge.

Loretta Ann Rosales, chairwoman of the Commission on Human Rights, said her office would look into the mass grave, but that it's too early to say whether the remains found in northern Quezon province were victims of a rebel purge.

Soldiers and policemen on Sunday unearthed at least 30 skeletal remains of people believed slain by New People's Army, or NPA, rebels as suspected military spies in the 1980s, army spokesman Maj. Harold Cabunoc said.

The remains were exhumed from a shallow grave discovered by a farmer in San Francisco town, he said.

Cabunoc said some of the skeletons bore marks of torture, including cracked skulls.

He said none of the remains had been identified, and appealed to those with missing relatives to cooperate with authorities in identifying them.

Rosales urged caution before drawing conclusions. "We will investigate, but let's not make any conclusion yet on who did it," she said in a telephone interview.

Leaders of the Communist Party of the Philippines and its armed wing, the NPA, have acknowledged that some rebel commanders killed 600-900 suspected spies and government informers in the southern Mindanao region more than two decades ago.

More than 60 other suspected spies were killed in Quezon province and outlying areas southeast of Manila, according to people who survived the purge.

The guerrillas later acknowledged the killings as among the most horrible blunders in the Marxist insurgency, which has raged for 43 years.

Cristina Palabay, spokeswoman for the Philippine human rights group Karapatan, challenged the military to prove its allegation that the grave contained victims of the NPA.

She said similar discoveries in the past had been used by the military as reasons to arrest left-wing activists allegedly linked to the mass killings.

Shocked Aurora vows to remember shooting victims

Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper reads the names of the 12 victims killed in a shooting rampage at a movie theater in Aurora, Colo.

?

By Miranda Leitsinger, NBC News

?AURORA, Colo. ? Well-wishers,?shocked townspeople and family members of the victims sang and prayed Sunday night and vowed to remember those who died?in?a?horrific movie theater shooting rampage,?not the act of violence that tore apart their quiet city.

?We are a family in Aurora," said Aurora Mayor Steve Hogan. "We are good hard-working people who believe in the goodness of our fellow man. We are coming together as a family would.?

Colorado Gov.?John Hickenlooper read aloud the names of the 12 people killed in the shooting, and after each one?the crowd chanted?in unison:?"We will remember."

Hickenlooper also?deliberately avoided mentionting the name of?the 24-year-old suspect, James Eagan Holmes, who allegedly wounded 58 other theatergoers at Friday's?Batman movie premiere. ?I refuse to say his name," he said. "In my house, we?re just going to call him Suspect A.?

At the conclusion of the vigil outside Aurora City Hall, members of the crowd held aloft lit candles and sang "Amazing Grace."

Tears flowed freely among the hundreds?of mourners who packed?a grassy area?for the ceremony, but overall the crowd seemed surprisingly upbeat. Many?in attendance held?flags, flowers, signs and balloons. Among the messages on the signs: ?Like the dark knight, we will rise again. We are all Colorado,"?and "Be praying for families! Colorado is family!" A large banner at the rear read, "Angels walk with those who grieve."?

Many of those at the vigil?knew at least one of the victims, or their family members.

Rick Wilking / Reuters

Family members of victims killed in Friday's Century 16 movie theater shootings grieve at a prayer vigil in Aurora, Colo., on Sunday night.

Deajanae Elliot was part of a group of several dozen friends of shooting victim Micayla Medek, 23, who wore Hello Kitty regalia to honor ?the 23-year-old, a big fan of the Japanese cartoon character: Some held candles in Hello Kitty cups, many wore pink T-shirts and others sported stickers or temporary tattoos.?

"She's looking down and smiling at us with all the Hello Kitty she sees," said Elliot, who attended high school with Medek.?

She said the vigil was comforting for her, and good for the city.?

"I thought it was very beautiful,? she said. "Knowing that there are people out there who care even though they don?t know who she is, that's very comforting."

A group of postal workers turned out to support colleague Tom Sullivan, whose 27-year-old son, Alex M. Sullivan, was among the dead. Among them was Charles Garcia, 55, who said his son was in another room at the theater when the shooting occurred. Two coworkers also were shot, including one of the dead, Matt McQuinn.?

"He's seeing a counselor," Garcia said. "He's just having trouble grasping why a senseless thing has to happen like this."

Also?attending the ceremony was Kronda Seibert, 26, who lives in Aurora with her partner.

"We came out to support our community and make it clear that, even though we are going through some hard times, we're going to rise up above this and be a stronger community because of it," she said. "I think that this is going to give the community something to focus on to improve on how people understand hopefully what's going on that would cause someone to have a breakdown that would hurt other people."?

After meeting with grieving families of a massacre that left 12 people dead, President Barack Obama says that the entire nation prays for them.

As the vigil was getting under way, President Barack Obama addressed the media at a nearby?hospital, where many of the victims were treated.

?I came to them not so much as president, but as a father and a husband,? Obama said, after meeting with family members of the dead and a number of hospitalized survivors.?"We can all understand what it would be to have someone taken from us in this fashion."

?Most of the conversation was filled with memory,? he said of his talks with the victims' families. ?It was an opportunity for families to describe how wonderful their brother , or son or sister had been. ? I conveyed to them ?? that I was there to serve as representative of the entire country and let them know that we are thinking of them at this moment and will think about them every day.?

@PeterBurnsRadio on behalf of @JessicaRedfield's family with @JordanGhawi

President Obama speaks with family members of shooting victim Jessica Ghawi.

The shooting also hung heavy over?church services in Aurora Sunday morning.

?I just remember going up and driving by the theater? late Friday, Pastor Jeff Noble told his New Life Community Church congregation. ?I just started bawling like a baby because I think it was then that it hit me. This wasn?t some TV show. This wasn?t some event that happened 1,000 miles away ? it happened in our community.?

Like others who spoke with NBC News, Noble had seen movies at the AMC Theater Century 16, located in a bustling mall here. He couldn?t explain why the attack had happened in Aurora, a suburb of Denver that retains a rural feel, with rolling grass plains and wildlife often spotted?from the roadside.

Terry Jackson, who lived for 20 years in Aurora and?now resides in nearby Lafayette, described his former home as a ?peaceful suburb? that was both cosmopolitan and laid back.

?I just could not imagine anything like this ever happening, especially in the city. I certainly never thought of it as a dangerous place,? said the 50-year-old software engineer.

As detectives pored over evidence from the home of Aurora shooting suspect James Holmes, it became clear how complicated the investigation might be. NBC's Mike Taibbi reports.

Jackson said he was ?very angry? about the attack and the fallout, and noted that an online commenter had called Colorado the ?mass murder capital of the world.?

?We?ve got mountains. We?ve got ? a really beautiful city,? he said. ?But this ? and Columbine, that?s what we?re known for.?

Jackson, his wife, Donna, and their 20-year-old son brought a bouquet of white and yellow flowers to a makeshift memorial started on an empty lot Saturday across the way from the theater, which had been closed to the public following the attack as investigators removed bodies from the crime scene.

A man who had posted crosses for the victims of Columbine High School came to the memorial site on Sunday and placed 12 white crosses for those slain in the theater. Columbine High School, where 13 students were killed in a shooting spree in 1999, is about half an hour from Aurora.

Among the 12 who died early Friday at a movie theater in Aurora, Colo. were fathers, mothers, a little girl ? even heroes. NBC's Kristen Dahlgren reports.

?

It will be a while before wounds heal, if they do completely, said Noble, the local pastor.

?There?s always a scar and there?s always a hole, something that?s missing in their lives,? he said. ?For a number of people, there is going to be a new normal.?

NBC News' Mike Brunker?contributed to this report.

Jam Tips: How To Boost Your Creative Process With The ...

Because Transmedia projects are fundamentally transdisciplinary, they can only be the result of collaborative work between several team members, who come from various backgrounds or industries and have different skills. French digital and cultural communications consultant Karine Halpern created the 7 Transmedia Families deck of cards, a brainstorming and design thinking tool meant to help teams figure out how best to leverage the skills of their team members, boost the creative process and improve the transmedia project as it?s being built. Jammers, if you?re unsure what role you can play in a team, or if you?re stuck at some point of your project building, the cards are here to help ? and the TSF team as well.

TransmediaSF: what is the deck of card?

Karine Halpern: The game should help people to get ?transmedia ready?, no matter what their background or skills, or specialty are. The cards are based on a real game from the 19th century in its version with 6 family members. The original British version has 4 members and the French version has 6 adding the grand parents. For the Transmedia family game, we called family members ?transmedia characters? so it does make sense in the context of transmedia production. It helps to design a more open storyworld, using more platforms and ideas. The game should be used for training, creative processes, design thinking, and it works very well as a tool for coaching and evaluating a transmedia project at any stage. There are several ways it can be used it. The guidelines?only work for a small group, so the idea is to hack the game and reinvent the rules each time someone wants to use it. In a way, it is a transmedia tool.

TSF: what is the vision behind this project?

KH: This project is an experiment for a research work, and I wanted other people to use it for their own work too, as an experience in shared knowledge. I shared this project with designer Cynthia Jabar (http://www.cynthiajabar.com/), she was a very good partner to make the game a reality. The current version is the ?Prototype?, but I am expecting feedback from practitioners (or advocates) in order to modify the cards so we can iterate and move to a more scalable version of it. About 80 people around the world have a deck of the prototype already. The most obvious family is, of course, the ?Storyworld? family since the story is the key element of a transmedia project. But once you have a story, what?s next? You can?t just have a story, you also need to design an experience. For me, the most important family is actually the ?Communities? family. It is your fan-base and your audience. The card game is basically looking for methodologies and best practices. I wanted to show how complex a native transmedia production could be. The 7 transmedia families shows that a transmedia project is fundamentally collaborative. Nobody can work on its own, you need a combination of different expertise to produce transmedia stories and experiences. In my opinion, it is necessary to have a least one card from each family to create a transmedia project. The goal is to use the deck of cards to figure out what cards ? and what expertise ? you need for your transmedia project. You can start by forming an ideal native transmedia opus, and then iterate; each model is ad hoc and you will never repeat a model.

TSF: How did you come up with all the cards and transmedia characters? Is it going to evolve?

KH: Besides the ideas already mentioned, I based my research on all the stories I came across and worked on during my career working in film, media and politics, so it really is an empirical work. I met with people like Lance Weiler, visited hackerspaces, attended conferences, read blogs, tweeted about it, attended workshops and meetings on the current Open Culture movement. I drew on my experience with creative processes, methodologies and maieutics, where asking the right question leads to the right answers. For now we are just about to design a crowd-funding campaign to pay back expenses of the prototype, share insights about the business model itself, create a 2.0 version, and then an 1 app! If it works well, it should lead to a collection of cards? Some would be free and online, some will be only IRL, some will be ?collectors?. People could buy their cards online, and make their own to keep improving the mapping of transmedia families as the industry matures. The cards are under the Creative Commons license. We?ll most likely change the design, improve some cards, but the tool remains the same no matter what the cards say.

TSF: Are there old media professions as well as new media professions? Are some cards new types of profession we see emerging because of transmedia?

KH: We?re definitely seeing new professions emerge, but ?old? professions are actually not that old and are still needed. However, it is true that the industry is also looking for more more polyvalent professionals, so in a way it is becoming harder to have only one expertise. The idea with the 7 families is to show that a transmedia project requires very different types of expertise, so we do need to work with others collaboratively, sometimes in co-creation. However, we do have a super power. We are Fairies and Alchemists, we can create transmedia from scratch (if not a franchise) and transmedia is changing the traditional models of creation and production, in the same way it is the concept of authorship, and business models. Transmedia as such is not a consequence of the digital age, but it is now emerging as an art form of itself because of the new tools available, the potential of interactivity and of social influence.

TSF: How can it typically be used in a hackathon or workshop? What advice would you give to people who don?t yet know how to use their skills for or what role they can play in the building of a transmedia project?

KH: First of all, be free. Basic mantra : everyone is a storyteller. Optional mantra: tools and platforms are here to serve you and not the other way around. The cards are made to foster communication, to help build good teams, and boost the creative process and thinking. Based on your needs and where you are in your creative process, you can get inspired by the cards, use them to improve the experience you?re designing, to think about group dynamics ? If you are stuck or lacking creativity during while creating your project, take a short break, let it go. You can use the cards to boost your imagination, take a step back, or challenge your self. Typically, you can pick a card out of the complete game and ask those basic questions:

?Do I already have this profile in my team??
?What skills do I have that can add value to my team and to the transmedia experience we?re building??
?Is my transmedia project too big? Too small? Can this card change anything in my creative process to reach the right balance??
Look at all the cards now: ?What do I miss the most for a good native transmedia project??
Turn to your team: ?Can you read (interpret) this card for me??
You can also pick each card you think you already have in the current development of your project, and ask what you?re missing. For instance, if you think you are done building your Storyworld, why not take a look at the Communities Family and explpore ways in which you could improve your Storyworld to make it more open. Then, take a card in the Gameplay family and try to think about whether adding some gaming elements would enhance the experience you?re building, for instance. The cards work very well if you are going to implement into Social Samba and Conducttr. Since the TransmediaJam will focus on social media, you might think that you only need the ?Communities? family, but not at all. Every family has its own qualities and characteristics to bring.
