You'll be cooking with Samsung Windows 8 PC

2 hrs.

Serious cooks?know that digital devices and cooking often don't mix well in the kitchen. Messy hands, spills and splatters can be a hazard to iPads and other devices. However, Samsung this week at the?IFA 2012 tech show in Germany launched new all-in-one computers that earn a spot on the kitchen counter.

From a cook's perspective, Samsung's new AIO PC Series 7 has some pretty useful features, such as a viewing angle of 178 degrees both vertically and horizontally, which means you can be over the stove or working at a table and still have an undistorted view of the screen. With?Windows 8 touch-enabled?and more sensitive screen, all 10 fingers can be used for more navigation options.

But where Samsung's AIO really excels is with its gesture control. If you already use?an iPad?or other device in the kitchen while you're cooking, you know that using it is anything but seamless ? you're constantly wiping off your hands before swiping the screen to move on with a recipe.?

Samsung's AIO has five hand gesture recognition features that you can use from up to about a yard away. For instance, swipe right or left to turn a page in an?e-cookbook , rotate your palm clockwise or counterclockwise to change the volume of an instructional video or stop it by waving your hands. Plus, a how-to cooking app featuring British chef Jamie Oliver, best known for his Naked Chef series on Food Network, comes pre-installed.

The AIO PC Series 7 comes in two sizes ? 27-inch and 23-inch glossy displays, 720p HD (2560-by-1440 resolution), along with the choice of an Intel i5 or i7 processor, up to 1TB HDD, 64GB SSD and a Blu-ray drive. Pricing for the Series 7 ranges from $1,099 to $1,699 and the computers will be available Oct. 26.

This Stock Could Tumble, Thanks to China?s Lies

Living halfway around the world, it?s hard for most of us to really know what?s happening in China. But more and more, what happens in that country affects the global economy and stock markets ? and eventually your portfolio.

We do know the Chinese economy has been through a stunning multi-decade boom, which has catapulted it past countries such as Japan and Germany. We also know one other salient fact: Chinese political leadership continues to stick with a ?command and control? policy, which has, at least until now, been more effective than many would have suspected. Yet increasingly, that heavy-handed top-down control is showing signs of deepening trouble ? if media reports are to be believed.

Cracks emerging?
Some well-known investors, most notably short seller Jim Chanos, have been insisting for quite some time that the Chinese economy is in trouble. Yet the monthly data provided by the government point to continued growth and only hint at small signs of slowing growth. Then again, Chinese government statistics are more propaganda than fact.

However, in recent weeks and months, the global financial press, which has a direct presence in China, has been making a repeated case that China is in far more trouble than many suspect. The Economist, for example, has written about how an untold number of newly-built apartment buildings are sitting vacant ? with zero interest from consumers. [Watch this Australian newsmagazine's report on China's "ghost cities" -- you'll be shocked if you haven't seen this before.] More recently, The New York Times published this article, which explains how the country keeps producing goods even in the absence of demand.

If this report is correct, then it shouldn?t come as a surprise. The Soviet Union showed us decades ago that the entire premise of a ?command and control? economy has one central flaw: Government can dictate what companies should be producing, but it can?t force consumers to buy them. And without the natural push and pull mechanisms built into supply chains, manufacturers have no way of quickly responding to changes in demand.

Paralysis ? at precisely the wrong time
China is gearing up for its once-every-five-years rotation of political leadership. According to various media reports, there is a pitched battle between the old guard (which wants to continue the current command and control policies), and the new guard (which argues for a more traditional capitalist approach). It?s not clear which side will come to dominate the next era in the politburo, but it is clear that the government is ill-inclined to make any moves while the politics heat up.

Sure, China is adding stimulus to certain areas of the economy, but any moves to boost production would be coming right at a time when unsold goods are already in abundance. ?Let?s make more? hardly seems the wise policy move. China, in its efforts to steer a soft landing, may be unwittingly steering a course for a hard landing as it pulls the wrong economic levers.

Adjusting exposure
There is no other stock in my $100,000 Real-Money Portfolio that is as vulnerable to China than copper and gold miner Freeport-McMoran (NYSE: FCX). When I recommended this stock four months ago, I noted that global copper demand appears set to exceed supply by 2013, even in a period very weak global economic growth. According to various forecasts, that still appears to be the case.

Trouble is, we simply have no idea what is happening in China. We don?t know how much the economy is slowing, and more to the point, we don?t know the size of China?s copper stockpiles. And if China stumbles, then what does that mean for copper prices? Well, they can surely go lower, as this five-year chart shows.

My head tells me that copper producers are poised to benefit from constrained long-term supply. My heart tells me that China is becoming a wildcard that few still seem to recognize. In such a state, I?m going with my heart.

I recommended this stock at $37 and it is now $36. I simply want to avoid the prospect of larger losses. The fact that this stock was below $32 in late July tells me where this stock might return in coming weeks. Why that number? Because that?s where this stock stood before investors developed a sense that the Federal Reserve would provide another round of stimulus to the economy ? which is always good for commodity stocks in the short-term.

How much of the recent gain already reflects the Bernanke boost? It?s hard to say, but it?s worth noting that the Fed chairman is set to speak on Friday, Aug. 31, in Jackson Hole, Wyo., and any signs that he won?t take action at the next Fed meeting could cause commodity stocks to reverse course.

Risks to Consider: As an upside risk, if the Chinese economy doesn?t slow as much as I fear and if Bernanke indeed gives the economy another round of juice, then this stock could easily move into the $40s. But that feels more like gambling than investing.

Action to Take ?> As such, I will sell my 200-share stake in Freeport-McMoran 48 hours after you read this.

What babies eat after birth likely determines lifetime risk of obesity, rat study suggests

What babies eat after birth likely determines lifetime risk of obesity, rat study suggests

Friday, August 31, 2012

Rats born to mothers fed high-fat diets but who get normal levels of fat in their diets right after birth avoid obesity and its related disorders as adults, according to new Johns Hopkins research.

Meanwhile, rat babies exposed to a normal-fat diet in the womb but nursed by rat mothers on high-fat diets become obese by the time they are weaned.

The experiments suggest that what mammalian babies ? including humans ? get to eat as newborns and young children may be more important to their metabolic future than exposure to unhealthy nutrition in the womb, the Hopkins scientists say.

"Our research confirms that exposure to a high-fat diet right after birth has significant consequences for obesity," says Kellie L.K. Tamashiro, Ph.D., an assistant professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and leader of the study published online in the journal Diabetes. "But it also suggests that by putting children on a healthy diet in infancy and early childhood, we can intervene and potentially prevent a future of obesity, diabetes and heart disease."

Obesity has become a worldwide public health problem that often leads to many other disorders, such as cardiovascular disease, hypertension, type 2 diabetes, some cancers and arthritis. A significant concern in Western society is the consumption of modern diets high in fat: Rates of obesity are skyrocketing, costing the health care system billions and reducing longevity.

In the Johns Hopkins experiments, newborn baby rats exposed to a high-fat diet through the breast milk of rat mothers fed high amounts of fat were more likely to gain excessive weight, have impaired tolerance to glucose (a sign of prediabetes) and become insensitive to the hormone leptin, which regulates appetite and body weight in humans and rodents and can be disrupted in obese mammals. Leptin, secreted by fat cells, signals how much fat is around and controls food intake; obese people often are insensitive to the signals, for reasons so far unclear.

To compare the impact on offspring obesity of prenatal versus postnatal exposure to a maternal high-fat diet, Tamashiro and her team began by feeding half of the pregnant rats a high-fat diet and half a normal diet. After birth, half of the offspring of the high-fat moms were given to the normal-diet moms to nurse and vice versa. Those exposed to a high-fat diet both before and after birth (through breast milk) gained more weight and were obese by the time they were weaned, as were those who were only nursed by rats on a high-fat diet. Those born to mothers on a high-fat diet but nursed by rats on a normal diet did not suffer the same fate.

Tamashiro and her colleagues currently are trying to determine whether exercise in early rat development, the equivalent of elementary school age in humans, can reverse the effects of exposure to a high-fat diet.

"These animals ? like children ? are still developing and responding to their environment, and, as much as possible, we want to make sure they develop properly so bad health consequences don't occur," she says.

While the findings are important steps in understanding how prenatal and postnatal environments affect development, Tamashiro cautions that data from rats don't directly translate into human application.

Still, Tamashiro says, obstetricians may be on the right track as they rethink guidelines for pregnant women. Many suggest that obese women limit weight gain during pregnancy by reducing fat and calories. Obese mothers who switch to healthier diets during pregnancy and then maintain them while nursing may be able to help their children avoid the road to obesity, Tamashiro says.

"Obesity rates have increased threefold over the last 20 years," she says. "We know it's not because of genetics because our genes don't change that quickly. So we are focusing on the developmental environment. Obese children are developing metabolic disorders earlier, affecting their quality of life and health over the long term. Prevention is probably the best strategy we have."

The Moscow-Washington ?Hotline?:? Remembering A Cold War Icon 49 Years Later

Forty-nine years ago Friday, one of the most famous and enduring symbols of the Cold War came into being.

On Aug. 31, 1963, the United States and Soviet Union installed the 24-hour-a-day ?hotline? communication system so that the leaders of the world?s two superpowers and biggest nuclear players could quickly contact each other in order to prevent World War III from erupting accidentally.

The idea for the instant communication device arose in the wake of the Cuban Missile Crisis the prior year ? which saw Moscow and Washington very nearly enter into a cataclysmic nuclear war. (During that dangerous period, communications between the two rivals could take up to 12 hours ? long enough for a miscommunication to spark an unprecedented conflagration).

In the beginning the ?hotline? was not a telephone, but rather teletypes and a duplex wire telegraph circuit. (Indeed, in the beginning there was no voice element at all, over worries that verbal communications could easily lead to misunderstandings and potential gaffes).

The Kremlin installed an American teletype machine to receive messages from the Kennedy administration, while Soviet teletypes were put into the Pentagon (not the White House, as some mistakenly believed).

Follow us

The Americans and Russians also had to exchange encoding devices so each side could decipher the messages coming in (so, in effect, communications were not really ?instantaneous? since they had to be decoded).

Also, since the messages were transported by a transatlantic cable thousands of miles long, security precautions had to be implemented in order to prevent the interception of messages by third parties.

The first message that Washington sent was the playful: "The quick brown fox jumped over the lazy dog's back 1234567890." (This seemingly inane message was employed because it used every letter in the English alphabet and all the Arabic numerals).

The ?hotline? was first used for a serious purpose during the Six-Day War in 1967 between Israel and Egypt. During that crisis, the U.S. and Russia notified each other of their respective military maneuvers in the Middle East and Mediterranean, in order to ease any fears over provocative moves by either side.

By 1971, under President Richard Nixon, the hotline added a telephone, while the principal telegraph line was augmented by two satellite communication lines.

The ?hotline? was used during a number of subsequent regional conflicts, including the 1971 India-Pakistan War; the 1973 Yom Kippur War; the Turkish invasion of Cyprus in 1974; and in 1979, when the Russians invaded Afghanistan.

Even after the Cold War ended, the hotline remained in effect between Moscow and Washington, and still does today.

India and Pakistan also installed a similar ?hotline? in 2004. The U.S. also has a similar communication arrangement with China.

On a lighter note, one of the most iconic devices of 1960s pop culture ? the ?batphone? from the ?Batman? TV series ? was a spoof of the real ?hotline? between Moscow and Washington. Another 1960s spy spoof, the U.S. TV program ?Get Smart,? also lampooned the hotline.

Philippines business process outsourcing activities | Tempo - News ...

Manila, Philippines ? THE report that the United States has rejected an anti-outsourcing bill comes as a welcome development for the Philippine business process outsourcing (BPO) industry. It is a win-win proposition for both Philippine and American companies. Outsourcing business services to the Philippines helps make American companies more competitive and profitable, says the Business Process Association of the Philippines (BPAP), the umbrella association for the information technology (IT)-BPO, serving as one-stop information and advocacy gateway for the industry.

Citing studies, BPAP said ?outsourcing has little impact on job losses; instead, outsourcing can free up resources to create more jobs at home.? A study of the hiring practices of 2,500 US multinationals showed that for every job outsourced, nearly two new jobs are created in the US.

The IT-BPO industry in the Philippines has had robust growth; it recorded $11 billion investments and increased 638,000 jobs in 2011, on track to meet its fiveyear target of generating $25 billion revenues by 2016. This year, the goal is to produce 126,000 new jobs and generate $2 billion in extra revenue.

The Philippines holds a major portion of global outsourcing market, due to the English proficiency of Filipinos. Call centers in the Philippines count among its clients several giant multinationals. Pharmaceutical firms outsource their medical transcriptions in the country. The government offers tax incentives to BPO firms, including value-added tax and income tax exemption.

We wish the Officials of the Philippines Government, headed by President Benigno S. Aquino III and Vice President Jejomar C. Binay, Department of Science and Technology Secretary Mario D. Montejo, Department of Labor and Employment Secretary Rosalinda D. Baldoz, and Business Processing Association of the Philippines Chief Executive Officer Benedict C. Hernandez, all the best and success in all their endeavors. CONGRATULATIONS AND MABUHAY!

Miley Cyrus Makes Out with a Girl!

Late last week, Evan Rachel Wood got in a bit of trouble for joking that Miley Cyrus was gay.

But the singer herself then went out and made a few onlookers curious at The Darby in New York City, where the 19-year old partied it up with friends and even exchanged a few lip locks… with members of the same sex!

New Look for Miley Cyrus

"“She was trying to get everyone’s attention,” a witness told The New York Post of Miley's girl-to-girl kisses.

But Cyrus eventually changed venues and met up with fiancé Liam Hemsworth at 1Oak, where she and the actor sat at a table with owner Scott Sartiano.

All in all, it was a relatively harmless and fun evening for the star, especially considering the controversy her mouth has gotten her into during past nights out.

Link between protein and aggressive, recurring prostate cancer discovered

ScienceDaily (Aug. 27, 2012) ? In a study to decipher clues about how prostate cancer cells grow and become more aggressive, Johns Hopkins urologists have found that reduction of a specific protein is correlated with the aggressiveness of prostate cancer, acting as a red flag to indicate an increased risk of cancer recurrence.

Their findings are reported online in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences on Aug. 27, 2012.

The team focused on a gene called SPARCL1, which appears to be critically important for cell migration during prostate development in the embryo and apparently becomes active again during cancer progression.Normally, both benign and malignant prostate cancer cells express high levels of SPARCL1, and reduce these levels when they want to migrate. The team correlated this reduction or "down regulation" of SPARCL1 with aggressiveness of prostate cancer.

"Our findings should allow physicians to not only pinpoint those patients whose cancers are destined to return after surgery, but could also reveal a potential new option for treatment," says Edward Schaeffer, M.D., Ph.D., an associate professor of urology, oncology and pathology at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and co-director of the Johns Hopkins Prostate Cancer Multidisciplinary Clinic.

In their study, Schaeffer and lead investigator Paula Hurley, Ph.D., also found that SPARCL1 seems to play a role in predicting tumor recurrence in a number of other diseases including bladder, breast, colon, rectum, tongue, lung, skin and ovarian cancers.

The team is now working to decipher the specific mechanism that controls the gene in hopes of

developing a treatment that can reset SPARCL1 to normal levels and potentially prevent a patient's cancer from recurring. Hurley is currently investigating novel genes that are not only prognostic of lethal prostate cancer but also contribute to prostate cancer progression to metastasis.

According to the American Cancer Society, about 240,000 men in the United States are expected to be diagnosed with prostate cancer this year; the majority are over age 65.The disease is the second leading cause of death among U.S. men. An estimated 28,000 men in the U.S. will die of prostate cancer this year.

"While many of our patients are initially cured with surgery, some inexplicably have their cancers return," says Schaeffer. "We are working to identify patients at higher risk of recurrence and our ultimate goal is to develop new treatments that would prevent the return of the cancer."

Funding for the study was provided by the U.S. Department of Defense Prostate Cancer Research Program.Corresponding grant numbers are DOD-W81XWH-10-2-0056 and W81XWH-10-2-0046 PCRP Prostate Cancer Biorepository Network (PCBN).Additional support was provided by the Flight Attendant Medical Research Institute YSCA, the Patrick C. Walsh Prostate Cancer Fund at Johns Hopkins, the Howard Hughes Medical Institute Early Careers Physician Scientist Award, the American Urological Association Astellas Research Star Award, and the National Institute of Health, with corresponding grant number P3-0CA006973.

In addition to Schaeffer and lead investigator Hurley, other Johns Hopkins researchers involved in this study were Luigi Marchionni, M.D.; Brian Simons, D.V.M.; Ashley Ross, M.D., Ph.D.; Sarah Peskoe, Sc.M.; Rebecca Miller, B.S.; Zhenhua Huang, Ph.D.; Bora Gurel, M.D.; Ben Park, M.D., Ph.D.; and Elizabeth Platz, Sc.D., M.P.H.Other investigators included Nicholas Erho, M.Sc.; Ismael Vergera, Ph.D.; Mercedeh Ghadessi, M.Sc.; and Elai Davicioni, Ph.D., at GenomeDx Biosciences Inc., in Vancouver, Canada; as well as Robert Jenkins, M.D., Ph.D., at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn.; and David Berman, M.D., at Queens University in Kingston, Canada.

The HR ?function has seen some of the most radical shifts in expectations compared to any other field in the corporate environment. Forces such as the technological revolution in the last twenty years, globalization, business process outsourcing among others have challenged HR managers to rethink their role in organizations. In addition to these, organizations require you as an HR manager to prove your relevance continually.

Aligning Organizational Activities to Strategy

High performing organizations demonstrate a high degree of alignment to strategy. An organization whose strategy is clear to all business units tend to perform better than their non- aligned competitors.

You have the duty of aligning HR policy to the overall business strategy.

One of the excellent manifestations of this alignment is the implementation of talent management as part of your HR practices.

Talent management adds a strategic dimension to traditional HR roles, and expands these roles to cover an employee?s full employment cycle. It also helps every organization to adapt well to the changing times of business. This is an integral part of the roles and responsibilities of a HR Manager.

Advantages of Using an Online Travel Agency | Travel and Leisure ...

Every cruise has something exclusive to present to all its travelers, and no stone is left unturned in fulfilling their comfort requirements. It is now trouble-free to reserve a cruise trip, by contacting an authoritative travel agency or registering online and having services that provide the top deals at economical prices.

Online travel agencies provide comprehensive information about the charges and exceptional packages that are mostly offered round the year. Tours are always jam-packed during travel seasons. So, it is wise to have the reservations done earlier. Online cruise agencies tend to present the most reasonable fares; people believe them the best choice for reserving a tour.

Benefits of utilizing online travel agency:

Travel agencies know their job. They contact to networks of airlines, hotels and tourist guide organizations. It is simpler for cruise agencies to systematize the whole tour for travelers, because they have in mind the exact people to contact.

Concessions

Cruise agencies are linked to numerous restaurants, car rental companies, airlines and other travel-related businesses. So, they have the authority to arrange cheaper trips and other economical deals that are difficult to locate on your own. Tour with a travel agency can, in fact, save a lot of money. However, not all organizations can do this. Thus, it is sensible to contact a trustworthy agency online.

Expert guidance

A cruise agency has a number of travel agents that can assist travelers to arrange anything that they need in trip. They can guide about the best time to visit the particular place, hotels to try, best places to see and activities to execute. For eventful people, a cruise agent can decrease or eradicate the need for the traveler to explore about the best place to visit. This is most imperative for the first time travelers who don?t have any idea where to go or what to do. Vacationers should prefer reserving through an online agency particularly when traveling abroad. Many tourists are clogged in international check-in counters and refused entry because of lack of information about the right documents to take. Travelers can put off all these misdeeds from occurring by simply reserving through an online agency.

24 hour service

Another great feature of booking an online tour agency is that people can shop for the trip package any time of the day or night. Common businesses normally close soon after the end of the usual work day and several are not open for extended hours on the off days. The Internet is available 24/7 days a week. Though people may not always be capable to contact a customer service agent, particularly if they want to do holiday planning at four in the morning, they can always look into packages offer on tour websites.

Payment options

As well, when working with an online travel agency, people have more payment options. When people work online to plan their trip, they can always get a payment type that will go with their needs. Morocco: Ageing Population to Increase by ... - Morocco World News

By Loubna Flah

Morocco World News

Casablanca, August 27, 2012

One Quarter of the Moroccan population will be aged above 60 by 2050 despite the fact that its population has been a young and fertile workforce for decades. The median age in the African continent will be increasing considerably by 2050. These findings were published by the French National Institute for Demographic Studies (NIDS).

According to the NIDS report, the figures submitted by the United Nations in 2010 are incrementally changing. Africa had only 5, 5% of people aged above 60 years in 2010. A low rate compared to Asia that had 9, 9% and Europe with 21, 7% of ageing population.

Yet, the study at hand predicts a gradual change in the demographics of the African continent. Seemingly, the proportion of inhabitants aged above 60 years will double for many African countries in the forthcoming 40 years.

In Morocco, the rate of aged population will shift from 5% in 2010 to more than 20% by 2050. Egypt will see its senile population jump from 8% to more than 20%. The figures reveal that the Maghreb countries are the fastest aging countries in Africa.

The median age for the African population is expected to rise mainly due to rising life expectancy and declining fertility. Life expectancy represents the life span of a new born. It can decrease sharply due to war and diseases. Improvement in the health system and welfare is liable to increase life expectancy.

On the other hand, low fertility rates are ascribed to the free access to contraception, late marriage and new division of labor among genders. In his study about low fertility, Peter McDonald attributes this demographic change to social liberalism. According to him, individuals have developed new aspirations in relation to the quality of their personal and economic lives, which has affected the capacity to form and maintain families.

Mac Donald highlights the role of gender equity in decreasing the fertility rate in many countries. He argues that family formation involves more risks for women than men. Women know that they have to compromise with their professional careers once they have a baby. The absence of facilitating provisions for women to combine work and family makes it harder for them to think about having many children.

The ageing of Moroccan population is raising concerns about the efficiency of public pensions system and healthcare for retired people. Only 13% of aged Moroccans receive a retirement pension. The rate of aged women receiving a public pension does not exceed 8% ,while men represent 18%.

The ability and alacrity of the extended families to cater for the needs of aged parents is slimming due to the change in the nuclear family, living costs and new labor division among genders. In many urban hubs across the African continent, the tendency is the same. The inflation has a direct impact on the quality of life.

While the current government is still striving to provide job opportunities to a large population of young Moroccans, the ageing of the Moroccan population remains a new challenge that should be addressed seriously. A real reform of the retirement pensions is highly needed to ensure that our elderly can have a decent retirement.

relationships - Talk About Marriage

Relationships are like jobs in the sense that you trade commodities, like time for money. Some relationships pay better than others. Some relationships are easier and others harder. Some relationships require specialized skills, while others require the tenacity to endure things that most other people would refuse to do. A doctor required a lot of education to they demand much more pay and can also pick and choose a lot more conditions of work than a manual laborer can. But its probably a lot easier to find a laborers work than a doctors.

A relationship with a woman that has children by previous partners has less to offer a prospective partner - she has less time and attention to give and offers lower priorities to a partner (her children will be of a higher priority than her partner).

So an average guy that doesnt have children that can pick between this woman, or another woman who has no children is better off picking the partner than has more time and energy to meet his needs - the one without children.

The opposite can be true also. A man with issues that might detract from his value, such as a mild mental illness, physical disadvantage or lower social status, might be seen as acceptable by that woman because his overall value matches hers.

Like jobs, relationships can be in competition with each other - if when in a job you happen to see another job that offers more money for the same work, you'd be crazy not to go for that job right? Only you dont want to let your current employer know you are seeking another job. Or if you are offered another job that pays better and has better benefits, you might try to get a promotion from your current employer, competing one against the other.

Just like with work, some relationships are abuse systems, designed to tear down the self esteem and value until a person is no longer worth anything to anyone and cannot survive outside of this system - or so they think.

New material could lead to thin, flexible, wall-sized TVs

14 hrs.

Sheets of material commonly used as an industrial lubricant ? just one-molecule thick ??may usher in a new era of thin, flexible, and transparent electronics, according to a researcher at the forefront of the technology.

The material, molybdenum disulfide, is similar to wonder material graphene that researchers have been working with since 2004. Unlike graphene, the molybdenum disulfide has a property called a bandgap.

?A bandgap is the most important property for any material to be useful in electronic applications,? Tom?s Palacios, an associate professor of electrical engineering and computer science at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, told me Friday.

?A bandgap is the property that allows a transistor, which is basically a switch, to either let the current flow or stop.?

A working switch means researchers can use the one-molecule thick sheets of the material to build "a new generation of electronic circuits,"?Palacios added.

Examples of possible gadgets range from living?room?wall-sized TVs that sip electricity to cars or buildings covered in sensors. The material could be used to weave the antenna and other circuitry of a cellphone into clothing ? meaning you could essentially wear your phone.

The material could even be applied to glass, producing displays on an office window or eyeglasses.?

Asked if this was in line with the Google glasses concept generating buzz of late, Palacios said, "It would definitely help to implement that concept."

He is particularly excited about the potential of the material to serve as a?supremely sensitive chemical sensor. Since the current flowing on the device is at the surface, anything that happens at the surface is going to affect the current.

"We are working on chemical sensors with molybdenum disulfide that should have much higher sensitivity than conventional sensors," he said. "They should allow us to detect single molecules of a given chemical component."

One could imagine that would be useful for anyone concerned about the spread or use of chemical weapons, for example.

Before any of this is possible, though, the researchers first need to be able to create the molybdenum disulfide sheets at a practical scale.?

The team currently gets small pieces via what?s known as the Scotch tape method, in which an adhesive is pressed against a molybdenum disulfide crystal and peeled off carefully.?

This sticks a few pieces of molybdenum disulfide to the adhesive, which is then pressed onto a piece of silicon.

"If we are very lucky, we will get a few flakes of molybdenum disulfide transferred from the scotch tape to the silicon wafer,??Palacios said. "And then we fabricate our devices."

The low-tech approach, he noted, is good for initial demonstrations of the material's potential, which is presented in a paper this month in the journal Nano Letters.??

A more efficient fabrication?process is required for commercialization of these potential technologies.

Palacios and colleagues are working on one such method via a process known as chemical vapor deposition. Initial results, he said, will be announced shortly.?

Stay tuned.

Why Dell Is A Must-Buy: The Comprehensive Bull Thesis - Seeking ...

Dell is a must-buy. That's all, folks! Thanks for stopping by.

Okay, just kidding - there's a lot more to the Dell Story than that.

Background: State of the Nasdaq

If you'll permit me a gross oversimplification of the tech stock (QQQ) landscape, there are essentially two types of tech stocks/companies. There's "old tech," AKA anything PC-related, and there's "new tech," AKA anything mobile-computing or social-media related.

What's the primary difference? Well, the first group is cheap. The second group is expensive.

So while everyone else is chasing momo growth stocks like LinkedIn (LNKD), Facebook (FB), Zynga (ZNGA), and Groupon (GRPN), I'll take a nice nap in the bargain bin with Dell (DELL), Intel (INTC), Cisco (CSCO), Seagate Technology (STX), and Microsoft (MSFT).

I've articulated my bullish stance on "old tech" several times. My core thesis is based on three bullet points:

  1. "Old tech" companies have been hit hard by (unjustified) fears about the impending death of the PC.
  2. This has caused their valuations to plunge dramatically into "value" territory.
  3. Deep value stocks outperform: "The cheapest one-10th of U.S. stocks relative to projected earnings have outperformed the most expensive one-tenth by 9.1 percentage points a year on average since 1968, according to Brandes Investment Partners.")

The focus of this article, Dell, fits the above three points to a T - it currently trades at an absurdly low 6.6 P/E based on guided earnings of $1.70 for the year. And that's why I love it.

The rest of this analysis is dividend into three parts: first, Dell's PC business. Second, Dell's non-PC business. Third, Dell's shareholder-friendly policies.

Dell-Icious: The PC side

The next time someone says "Apple (AAPL) killed the PC," refer them to the following two pieces of information.

  1. Apple hasn't "killed the PC." While desktops and notebooks don't have the same explosive growth rate as smartphones and tablets, both categories registered growth in 2011, with 209M notebooks and 112M desktops shipped. The latest data shows worldwide PC shipments dipped only 0.1% year-on-year during Q2 (note that US shipments dropped 6 to 11% year-on-year). Neither of those stats suggest that the PC is "dead." Limping, maybe. Dead, no.
  2. Apple has no interest in "killing the PC" - sorry to burst your bubble, but Apple actually sells PCs. MacBook Pro, anyone?

Now that we've established that the PC isn't actually dying, we can take a look at the elephant in the room: Dell's latest quarterly report. Both Dell and Hewlett-Packard (HPQ) had terrible earnings reports. These were widely-reported, as was a rather gloomy quote from Dell CFO Brian Gladden:

the revenue sort of deterioration we saw in the quarter was clearly above anything we expected.

At first, it sounds like pretty convincing evidence that the PC is "dying." But in reality, the quote was taken out of context. Gladden went on to say:

And I think that's something that as we think about moving forward, you can't expect that, that business will have that sort of deterioration over a long period of time. We think, as you look at the second half of the year, it's going to be challenging environment for that part of the business, but should stabilize as we come out of that and get Windows 8 sort of in the marketplace.

(Full transcript of the earnings call here, for those interested.)

Now, I don't blame journalists for jumping on the juicy sentence - after all, it is election season, and everyone needs to practice their grabbing-soundbites-out-of-context-skills. But when you look at his full explanation, and contextualize that with the latest data showing that worldwide PC sales were only down 0.1% in Q2.

As for sales being down 6 to 11% in the US, well, you can thank Windows 8 and the Osborne effect [and no, the Osborne effect has nothing to do with Justin Bieber and Ozzie Osbourne permanently scaring customers away from Best Buy (BBY)]. For those of you unfamiliar with the term, the "Osborne effect" refers to the fact that when customers know a new-and-improved version of a technology product is slated for release, they're less likely to buy the old models on the shelves. With the release of Windows 8 and mysterious "converged devices" ahead, it's safe to say that computer sales will start to improve again.

Think the current dip in PC shipments is unique? It's not. PC shipments also dipped prior to the release of Windows 7 and Windows XP, although there were of course other factors (like macro headwinds) affecting shipments. But when considering Dell's weak quarter and even worse guidance, keep in mind that there are macro headwinds right now. Tech god Apple also reported a substandard quarter (desktop Macs revenue down 19% year-on-year) and offered pretty awful guidance as well. It's not just Dell that's struggling - it's the computer industry (and economy) as a whole.

So, analyze Dell's latest quarter couched in that context. Is the PC business struggling? Undoubtedly. But is it struggling so badly that a 6.6 P/E is justified? Hardly.

Even More Dell-Icious: The Non-PC Side

Herein lies what I'm most excited about as a Dell shareholder. While the world sees Dell as "that PC company," Dell sees itself in a somewhat different light:

I am excited about our future. Information technology is a $3 trillion industry, and we currently have roughly a two-percent share. - Michael Dell, FY 2012 Letter From The Chairman

If Mr. Dell's enterprise focus isn't clear enough in the letter, it's pretty clear in this interview:

Well, in the last five years or so, we've really made a concerted shift in our business towards end-to-end IT solutions. [...] The next business for us is the enterprise data center, the server, storage, networking business. We make about a third of the servers that are on the Internet and about a third of the servers in North America, you know, built a tremendous business in storage and networking, fueled by some acquisitions.

Does that sound like "just a PC company" to you? No? Me neither. But talk is cheap, so let's pay attention to the financial data:

[H]erein lies some of the difficulty in looking at Dell strictly from a revenue standpoint because the business mix is shifting.

So, we're already at about half of our gross margin is not the PC. You know, last year our cash flow grew 39 percent, the $5.5 billion. So, the business mix is changing pretty dramatically and what I just kind of described is the new Dell in the last five years, that's gone from about $10-billion business to about a $20-billion business.

Indeed, this nice little graphic from Dell's FY2012 report demonstrates how Enterprise Solutions has been growing as a share of revenue. As of FY12, it's up to 29%, representing roughly $18B of revenue.

(click to enlarge)2012 Fiscal Year In Review financial graphs

The change in business model is a welcome refresher for Dell shareholders. As Michael Dell said, cash flow is growing. Even with flat revenue, the new business model is a lot more profitable. Take a look at the following chart, which illustrates the point nicely. From 2002 through 2010, revenue and profit moved almost like twins. But since then, they've decoupled, and despite mostly flat revenue, profit has increased dramatically.

DELL Revenue TTM Chart

DELL Revenue TTM data by YCharts

Is this new era of growth over for Dell? Not a chance. While there may be headwinds for PCs, there are certainly tailwinds for Dell's new IT focus. To steal a paragraph from one of my previous articles about Dell:

Global spending on IT products and services will top $3.6 trillion in 2012, buoyed by the rise of cloud computing. This trend shows no sign of slowing down, either. Enterprise spending on cloud services is expected to double from $109 billion in 2012 to $207 billion by 2016.

For those who believe that Dell won't be able to make the transition from PC-maker to enterprise solutions provider, think again. Dell's enterprise customers seem to be pretty happy:

"The development of this hub is one of the most significant alliance IT developments since oneworld was established more than a decade ago," said oneworld IT Director Jouni Naskali. "Thanks to the latest cloud integration technology from Dell Boomi, the IT hub dramatically speeds up and simplifies the addition of new airlines to the alliance, making the entire process substantially more efficient and cost effective - both for the new joiners and for our established carriers."

Seems like Dell's doing a pretty good job in enterprise solutions, huh? Maybe that's why, in the midst of an otherwise dismal quarter, the Enterprise Solutions and Services segment grew revenue by 6%.

Dell's Shareholder-Friendly Policies

Dell broke with tech tradition earlier this year when it initiated a dividend. At 8 cents a quarter, the dividend is good for a 2.8% yield at the current stock price, which is ahead of the yields of some blue chip DGI stocks like Wal-Mart (WMT) and Coca-Cola (KO). Is Dell in the same "never-fail blue chip" category as Wal-Mart and Coke? Probably not. Does it make a good addition to a portfolio?

Definitely. With over $11B of cash on the books and $5.5B cash from operations, Dell isn't exactly cash-strapped. With roughly ~1.7B shares outstanding, the current 32-cent annual dividend represents a mere $544M payout per year. Dell has plenty of room to follow in Cisco's dividend-boosting footsteps.

In addition to the dividend, Dell has a nice history of buying back shares.

DELL Shares Outstanding Chart

Conclusion: Dell Is A Must-Buy At This Price

By all accounts, Dell is still a very strong company. The company has healthy cash flow and is expanding in the quickly-growing enterprise market. It's undeniable that there's a rocky road ahead for PCs, however - and that's a big however - there is absolutely no indication that the PC is collapsing, and it's foolish to think that Apple has the computing market cornered always and forever. Even if PC sales continue to decline, when you factor in growth from enterprise services, there's absolutely no justification for Dell's absurdly low valuation. Pretend for a minute that Dell shutters its PC division entirely. Accounting for the fact that 50% of Dell's gross margin is not the PC, in this hypothetical scenario, Dell would STILL trade for a P/E below the broader market.

That's how cheap Dell is. Strip the name off for a second and consider the following. If you would buy an enterprise solutions provider with strong growth for a below-market P/E, then why wouldn't you buy that same provider with a PC division thrown in for free?

So what will happen to Dell's share price? Don't rule a quick jump out of the question - look at what happened to "old tech" peers Cisco and Seagate did.

STX Chart

STX data by YCharts

Personally, though, I'd prefer a nice slow and steady climb. The longer the market undervalues Dell, the longer I can continue building my position with fresh capital and reinvested dividends - and the better my profits when the market finally realizes Dell isn't dying.

For investors with a 3-5 year time horizon, Dell presents a fantastic buying opportunity. Don't pass it up.

Disclosure: I am long DELL, CSCO, HPQ, INTC, KO, MSFT, STX, WMT. I wrote this article myself, and it expresses my own opinions. I am not receiving compensation for it (other than from Seeking Alpha). I have no business relationship with any company whose stock is mentioned in this article.

Those policy documents are also going to be subjected to a quarterly review, which should allow the service to remain nimble if some rules turn out to be controversial or cumbersome. In advance of domestic robots, Panasonic releases Android-controlled appliances

Now that Panasonic has not-too-threatening LED bulbs in the bag, the Japanese electronics behemoth has its sights firmly set on the tech-savvy and energy-conscious (and also possibly lazy) set with the unveiling of a new Android app that will enable users to remotely operate compatible household appliances, program settings, and view energy savings from their smartphones.

?

On that note, Panasonic will also be releasing a new suite of smarty-pants home appliances to compliment the cloud-based Android app ??dubbed, most appropriately, Panasonic Smart App ??including X series air conditioners, refrigerators, washer-dryer combos, and health care products such as a blood pressure monitor, a body composition monitor, and calorie meter. Two small appliances released earlier this summer, a rice cooker and a steam microwave oven, will also work with the free app.

?

Panasonic's smart solutions are designed to make the user's everyday life more comfortable, convenient and energy efficient. Via the Panasonic Smart App, for example, users can control their air conditioners remotely from outside the home, check if the refrigerator is running efficiently, or set their preferred washing cycle using their smartphone. The new app also allows owners of the Panasonic healthcare products to create graphs tracking their weight and calories consumed by everyday activities among other things, making it easier to manage daily healthcare data. Furthermore, customer support such as checking device malfunctions will also be available.

?

The Android app and appliances will be available in Japan starting in late September. There?s no word on when they?ll reach American shores or if the company also plans to also release a loyal robot maid capable of bringing you a can of beer from the fridge or switching your laundry from the washer to dryer while you?re sprawled out on the couch watching "Here Comes Honey Boo Boo." Small steps folks, small steps.
