Swine flu infected 1 in 5, death rate low, study shows

LONDON (Reuters) - At least one in five people worldwide were infected with swine flu during the first year of the 2009-2010 H1N1 pandemic, an international research group said on Friday, but the death rate was just 0.02 percent.

The results echo other studies that found children were hit harder by the H1N1 strain, which swept around the world, than they are by regular seasonal flu outbreaks and that people over 65 were less vulnerable.

More accurate early surveillance is needed to plan for and respond to future pandemics, scientists said, in the wake of the international research led by the World Health Organization (WHO) and Imperial College London.

"Knowing the proportion of the population infected in different age groups and the proportion of those infected who died will help public health decision-makers plan for ... pandemics," said the WHO's Anthony Mounts who helped lead the study.

The information could be used to assess severity and develop mathematical models to predict how flu outbreaks spread and what effect different interventions, such as school closures, vaccination or preventative treatment, might have, he said.

The study, which used data from 19 countries, collated results from more than 24 studies involving some 90,000 blood samples collected before, during and after the pandemic.

The results, published in the journal Influenza and Other Respiratory Viruses, showed 20 to 27 percent of people studied were infected during the first year of the pandemic.

Because infection rates were likely to have been similar in countries where data were not available, this means as many as a quarter of the world's people may have been infected, the researchers said.

The WHO declared H1N1 swine flu a pandemic in June 2009 when laboratories had identified cases in 74 countries. By November 2009 it had started to peter out but the WHO did not declare the epidemic at an end until August 2010.

While this study did not set out to look at death rates, the researchers said they had used previously published and still-in-progress death rate estimates to calculate the proportion of people infected who died from the pandemic virus.

Based on an estimate of around 200,000 deaths, they said the case fatality ratio was probably less than 0.02 percent.

The WHO's official data show 18,500 people were reported killed by the H1N1 flu. But a study published in The Lancet last year said the actual death toll may have been up to 15 times higher at more than 280,000.

Maria Van Kerkhove of Imperial College London, who worked on the study, said it would improve understanding of the H1N1 pandemic's impact and fuel efforts to improve prediction of future pandemics.

"It puts it into context and gives us a fuller picture," she said in a telephone interview. "That's incredibly important because we know this will happen again and there is a lot of effort being put into trying to prepare now...for the next one."

(AP) ? Benjamin Millepied, the "Black Swan" choreographer who helped transform Natalie Portman into an obsessed, paranoid ballerina for the film and later married the actress, was named director of the Paris Opera Ballet on Thursday.

Millepied, 35, is a former principal dancer with the New York City Ballet who left in 2011 to create his own dance company in Los Angeles, L.A. Dance Project. He'll start at the Paris company in October 2014, when the current dance director, Brigitte Lefevre, retires.

Millepied and Portman, who have a son, met during the making of "Black Swan," Darren Aronofsky's psychological thriller that stars Portman as a ballet dancer.

Portman won the best actress Academy Award or her performance in the movie.

Motion control keeps electric car's four wheels -- and four motors -- on the road

Jan. 23, 2013 ? It weighs half as much as a sports car, and turns on a dime -- so its no surprise that the electric car being developed at Ohio State University needs an exceptional traction and motion control system to keep it on the road.

With four wheels that turn independently, each with its own built-in electric motor and set of batteries, the experimental car is the only one of its kind outside of commercial carmakers' laboratories.

"It is considered one of the promising future vehicle architectures," said Junmin Wang, assistant professor of mechanical engineering and Director of the Vehicle Systems and Control Laboratory at Ohio State. "It would make a good in-city car -- efficient and maneuverable, with no emissions. Our task is to make a robust control system to keep it safe and reliable."

In a paper in the January 2013 issue of the journal Control Engineering Practice, his team described the car's ability to follow a specific trajectory.

In tests on good road conditions at the Transportation Research Center in East Liberty, Ohio, the car followed a driver's desired path within four inches (10 cm). To test slippery road conditions, the researchers took the car to an empty west campus parking lot on a snowy day. There, the car maneuvered with an accuracy of up to eight inches (20 cm), and the vehicle traction and motion control system prevented "fishtailing" through independent control of the left and right sides of the car.

Wang characterized these results as more accurate than a conventional car, though the comparison is hard to make, given that conventional cars are much more limited in maneuverability by the transmission and differential systems that link the wheels together mechanically. The four independent wheels of the electric car give drivers greater control and more freedom of movement.

The experimental car also weighs half as much as a conventional car -- only 800 kg, or a little over 1,750 pounds -- because it contains no engine, no transmission, and no differential. The researchers took a commercially available sport utility vehicle chassis and removed all those parts, and added a 7.5 kW electric motor to each wheel and a 15 kW lithium-ion battery pack. A single electrical cable connects the motors to a central computer.

One hundred times a second, the onboard computer samples input data from the steering wheel, gas pedal and brake and calculates how each wheel should respond. Because the wheels are independent, one or more can brake while the others accelerate, providing enhanced traction and motion control.

In fact, a driver who is accustomed to conventional cars would have a difficult time driving a car of this experimental design, known as a "four-wheel independently actuated" (FIWA) car without the help of the vehicle motion and traction control system. With its ability to turn sharply and change direction very quickly, the car could be hard to control. Wang has tried it.

"Without the controller, it's very hard to drive. With the controller, it's quite nice -- quiet, and better control than commercial four-wheel drive," he said.

The main challenge for his team -- which consists of bachelor's, master's, and doctoral students as well as a few local high school students -- is to make the whole traction and motion control system energy-efficient and fault-tolerant, so if one wheel, motor or brake malfunctions, the others can compensate for it and maintain safety. It's a situation analogous to a multi-engine plane losing an engine: the other engines have to adjust thrust and angle to keep the plane safe and on course.

Future work will concern the FIWA car's energy efficiency for increasing its travel range in urban environments, and optimizing the weight distribution in the car.

Wang estimates that we won't see a FIWA car on the road for another 5-10 years, as researchers continue to develop new algorithms to control the car more efficiently and add more safety features.

The coauthor on the paper was Rongrong Wang, a doctoral student in mechanical engineering, and the team's high school participants came from the Columbus Metro School, a state of Ohio public STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) high school open to students from around the state.

This research was supported by Junmin Wang's awards from the Office of Naval Research Young Investigator Program (2009) and the National Science Foundation's Faculty Early Career Development Program (2012); the Honda-OSU Partnership program; and the OSU Transportation Research Endowment Program.

What the Oldest Meteorites Say about the Early Solar System (preview)

Cover Image: February 2013 Scientific American MagazineSee Inside

Microscopic analyses of chondrites, the oldest rocks in the solar system, are filling in details of what our neighborhood in space was like shortly before the planets formed

HIDDEN GEMS: The ?jewels? in this polarized light micrograph of a slice from a chondrite are chondrules, tiny beads of silicate minerals. Despite this chondrite's beauty, it belongs to the class known as ordinary. Image: J. M. DEROCHETTE

In Brief

  • Chondritic meteorites are made of the stuff that formed the planets, moons, asteroids and comets. Each chondrite group has its own distinctive textural and compositional characteristics.
  • From these properties, the author and other scientists have inferred roughly the locations where the chondrite groups formed and the relative amount of dust present in those regions.
  • The dust distribution resembles that seen in protoplanetary disks of dust and gas swirling around several stars known as T Tauri stars?in particular, young, one- to two-million-year-old versions about as massive as our sun. This resemblance suggests that T Tauri systems are good analogues of the sun and its own disk during the early stages of solar system history.

I pity Astronomers. They can see the objects of their affection?stars, galaxies, quasars?only remotely: as images on computer screens or as light waves projected from unsympathetic spectrographs. Yet many of us who study planets and asteroids can caress pieces of our beloved celestial bodies and induce them to reveal their innermost secrets. When I was an undergraduate astronomy major, I spent many a cold night looking through telescopes at star clusters and nebulae, and I can testify that holding a fragment of an asteroid is more emotionally rewarding; it offers a tangible connection with what might otherwise seem distant and abstract.

The asteroidal fragments that fascinate me most are the chondrites. These meteorites, which constitute more than 80 percent of those observed to fall from space, derive their name from the chondrules virtually all of them contain?tiny beads of melted material, often smaller than a rice grain, that formed before asteroids took shape early in the solar system's history. When we examine thin slices from chondrites under a microscope, they become beautiful to behold, not unlike some of the paintings by Wassily Kandinsky and other abstract artists.

5 most hated companies in America

1 day

Why are some companies hated? The answer often depends on who is asking. Corporations can anger their customers, fail their shareholders, and mistreat their employees. 24/7 Wall St. analyzed each of these angles to pick the most hated companies in America.

Nothing harms the long-term reputation of a company on Wall St. more than a steep, and often unexpected drop in its share value, particularly one that offers almost no chance of recovery. The stock prices of several companies on this list lost most of their value as they posted high double digits declines. In all of these cases this means a loss of billions of dollars in market capitalization.

24/7 Wall St.: The Worst Companies to Work For

This has certainly happened at Nokia Corp. (NYSE: NOK), which has been swamped by competition from Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL) and Samsung. It also happened at Hewlett-Packard Co. (NYSE: HPQ), which has been losing money for several quarters and continues to give up market share in the PC industry where it held the No.1 spot globally until recently.

Many of the most hated companies have millions of customers and tens of thousands of workers. With this kind of reach, keeping employees happy is crucial to more than just good office morale. Poor job satisfaction regularly results in low customer satisfaction.

One way to ensure low worker morale is by mass layoffs, which many of the companies on this list also have in common. American Airlines is one example. The airline, which has laid off many employees, has very unhappy workers, according to company and employee rating site?Glassdoor. The bankrupt airline was also rated by airline consumer interests website Airfarewatchdog.com as having the rudest workers in the industry.

Many of the most hated companies botched product or service launches. Failures include the new layout and pricing of J.C. Penney Co. Inc. (NYSE: JCP) stores and the series of failed product releases by Nokia. As many of the problems at these companies are dependent, such failures hurt revenue, which in turn force management to cut costs -- often by way of layoffs.

Several organizations might have made this list, but have had too many good things go their way in recent months. This includes Netflix Inc. (NASDAQ: NFLX), which made our list last year. Several bad decisions that hurt the company?s public relations in 2011, such as the increase in streaming fees, are well in the past. After a sharp drop in 2011, shares are finally recovering and are up more than 30 percent in the past three months.

It is worth noting that some of the companies on the list may have done very poorly by some measures but well by others. A few of the most hated companies have had good stock performances. Others may have satisfied customers. All of this was taken into account when the decisions for the final list were made.

24/7 Wall St.: The Best And Worst Run States in America

24/7 Wall St. editors reviewed a variety of metrics measuring customer satisfaction, stock performance, and employee satisfaction. This included total return to shareholders compared to the broader market and other companies in the same sector in the last year. We considered customer data from a number of sources, including Consumer Reports, the MSN Money/Zogby customer satisfaction poll, ForeSee's Holiday E-Retail Satisfaction Index, and the University of Michigan's American Customer Satisfaction Index. We also included employee satisfaction based on worker opinion scores recorded by Glassdoor. Finally, we considered management decisions made in the past year that hurt company image and brand value from marketing research firms BrandZ and Interbrand.

1. J.C. Penney
J.C. Penney went from being a mediocre national retailer with modest challenges to one of the great public company management disasters of the last few years. Former Apple retail chief Ron Johnson joined as CEO in November 2011, and promptly decided to radically change the chain?s pricing policy. The negative reaction was immediate. Sales fell 20?percent?in the first full quarter after Johnson began to implement his plans, and the company continued to lose sales at a rapid rate. Customers defected in droves as a sign of their dissatisfaction with the new retail model laid out by Johnson. And with its stock falling more than 40?percent?since Johnson joined, shareholder are also livid with the company, which has also completely eliminated its dividend. Durban Capital's retail analyst Steve Kernkraut recently said, "It's been a disaster, and it probably will continue to be a disaster. They've made every misstep you could imagine."

2. Dish Network Corp.(NASDAQ: DISH)
Dish?s remarkably poor customer service ratings show up in more than one survey. Customers knock its record in both the ACSI and in the MSN Money/Zogby poll. In the latter, it makes the "hall of shame" as one of the 10 worst-rated companies. Dish further alienated itself from its customers last May when it dropped several channels, including AMC. Among the shows that went off the satellite service were the highly popular ?Mad Men? and ?Breaking Bad.? Employee ratings of their experiences at the company are as terrible of those of its customers. In a recent BusinessWeek story titled ?The Meanest Company in America," former and current employees called the environment created by the company?s founder as a ?culture of condescension and distrust.? Glassdoor?s employee rating for Dish is among the worst in its entire survey that covers thousands of companies. Dish recently made an offer to buy broadband provider Clearwire, which would expand the satellite TV company?s broadband presence.

24/7 Wall St.: The Beers Americans No Longer Drink

3. T-Mobile USA
Last year, plans were in the works for AT&T Inc. (NYSE: T) to buy the U.S. branch of this struggling wireless carrier from its parent company, Deutsche Telekom. In December, AT&T cancelled those plans after the Justice Department sued to block the acquisition, saying the deal would "substantially lessen competition? in the industry. It appears that Deutsche Telekom is is now stuck with what is increasingly becoming the black sheep of the big four U.S. carriers. T-Mobile?s 4G network in the U.S. lags the other three carriers, and customer satisfaction is tied with AT&T mobility as the worst among wireless carriers, according to the ACSI. T-Mobile also rated as one of the worst in customer service according to MSN/Zogby?s annual poll. T-Mobile plans to improve its position through a marriage with smaller wireless company MetroPCS. It also plans to finally offer its customers the iconic iPhone. The fact of the matter is that these changes may be too little, too late. The company had an extraordinary net loss of 1,558,000 subscribers in the first three quarters of last year, out of the roughly 33 million it had at the end of 2011. During the same time, AT&T and Verizon Wireless continued to gain customers.

4. Facebook Inc.?(NASDAQ: FB)
Facebook alienated its investors in a particularly public fashion, which was played out for days in many major media outlets in the U.S. and abroad. Its IPO was one of the most widely anticipated since the dot-com public offering bubble years of 1999 and 2000, which was immediately followed by a collapse in the value of many of those offerings. From its IPO price of $35, the stock fell to below $20 in less than three months. Facebook has had customer satisfaction issues for some time, but recently did a particularly good job of alienating a portion of its nearly one billion members. According to the ACSI, Facebook is one of the most strongly disliked American companies, beaten out only by three public utilities companies. This comes in part from the company's continuing user privacy concerns. Mark Zuckerberg?s company did not help itself in this regard in 2012, after it announced that it had the right to republish any and all photos in the accounts of its Instagram users.

5. Citigroup Inc.?(NYSE: C)
Citigroup sacked CEO Vikram Pandit late last year, after he had shepherded the bank through the financial crisis and then fired thousands of workers as well. That, on its own, would be enough to destroy employee morale, but the bloodletting was not over. Pandit?s successor, Michael Corbat, said he would fire 11,000 more. The bank's board may have been frustrated with the pace of cost reductions under Pandit, but that was not the only issue that the board apparently believed had hurt long-term shareholder value. Pandit?s mishandling of the sale of its Smith Barney unit caused Citi to write down $2.9 billion, and the action triggered a cut in its credit ratings by Moody?s. Such actions did not endear Citi to investors. The recovery of Citi?s shares since the global financial meltdown has been far worse than its major competitors. Citi?s relationship with its customers has also been awful. It took a place on the MSN Hall of Shame of the 10 worst companies in America based on customer service. Its ACSI ratings, already low, further plunged in 2012. According to Interbrand, Citi?s brand value dipped 12% last year, and is now only two-thirds that of rival J.P. Morgan Chase & Co. (NYSE: JPM).

IBM On Business Analytics In Banking : Enterprise Irregulars

ibm1-300x225I was on an IBM analyst call ?on analytics in banking, featuring Laurence Trigwell, who is responsible for IBM?s business analytics strategy for the Financial Services industry.

In response to a number of challenges that banks (and other financial institutions) are facing, he identified three key initiatives for these companies:

  • Creating a customer-focused enterprise
  • Optimize risk and compliance
  • Increase flexibility and streamline operations

Obviously, analytics are pretty important to all of this, and IBM continues to focus on building their analytics portfolio with acquisitions such as Algorithmics and capabilities such as Watson. As with all of their portfolios, the IBM analytics portfolio contains a number of different products, making it a bit difficult for customers (and probably IBM sales reps) to wade through the potential solutions; however, for the purposes of this presentation, Trigwell has organized them around the three key initiatives listed above.

  • For creating a customer-focused enterprise, you need performance management, business intelligence and predictive analytics in order to gain insights from customer data to ?provide the most profitable offer to the right customer at the right time?. Although this sort of ?next best action? view of analytics for customer focus is part of the picture, I think that it misses the point completely: the stated goal (in quotes above) is really focused on the enterprise, not the customer, since it has enterprise profitability at the core. Not that profitability isn?t important, but if you?re going to be truly customer-focused, you need to have some goals stated as actual direct customer benefits. It might be the same thing, since providing an offer that is best suited to a customer?s needs means that they are more likely to accept it, which in turn results in great profitability in a probabilistic sense, but using language that is actually customer-focused when you?re talking about becoming a customer-focused enterprise is important to shift corporate culture.
  • For optimizing risk and compliance, you will need risk management, governance, performance management, compliance and business intelligence capabilities. I don?t disagree with this, and analytics (as well as other things, such as BPM) can definitely turn risk management and compliance from just overhead to a competitive advantage, if you do it well.
  • For increasing flexibility and streamlining operations, you will need performance management, predictive analytics and business intelligence capabilities for identifying process bottlenecks and operational inefficiencies. This is really about displaying and reporting on what?s happening, not fixing the problems, so not a sense-and-respond view of analytics or how it fits into process management in general.

In each of these three scenarios, the capabilities that he is suggesting that you need are actually IBM products: from three to five products for each scenario if you want to go all out. They have bundled some of these into industry solutions, but it?s not clear what the level of integration between the products is to create a seamless solution, or if they?re only integrated on the PO. Clearly, IBM needs to do some rationalization of their analytics portfolio to reduce the number of products (as they need to do in some of their other portfolios), although their usual strategy is to allow acquired companies to run pretty much untouched for quite a long time before starting to merge products. That strategy is good for the sales teams and the executives of the acquired company, but not necessary good for customers who have to deal with an increasingly large and bewildering array of products that overlap in functionality. The case studies that he discussed typically used only one product, either Algorithmics or Cognos, although one used both Cognos and SPSS, so I?m not sure that there?s much of an appetite for multiple analytics products applied to the same initiative.

In all cases, he talks about analytics as identifying/reporting on issues/situations, but not much on how analytics need to fit together with other systems to make it all happen. He touches on a bit of this with some of his case studies, but it would be great to see the analytics for banking shown in the context of other IBM products that can really make the three initiatives real, such as CRM, BPM and ECM.

Since banks and other financial institutions are my main customer base for consulting, and they?re all IBM customers, it will be interesting to see how they roll out some of the newer IBM products and solutions, especially in combination, in the years to come.

Bengal plans new land acquisition policy

LandThe West Bengal government is planning to come up with a new policy for land acquisition that would be specifically meant for land owned by private individuals or groups.

Since the auction route for land allocation is not favouring builders who are facing acute shortage of land for new development, the government has planned to create new policy.

Earlier, the government had planned to relax norms under the Urban Land Ceiling Act (ULCA) and eventually gave up which disappointed Bengal real estate developers. Developers had demanded relaxation of ULCA norms in case of housing projects reserve 25 percent of housing units for LIG.

The West Bengal government has come up with a new land policy for government-owned land. Under this policy, the land parcels will be allotted for commercial use through auction route, against the earlier mode of a tendering process. Under the policy, land for housing meant for low income group (LIG), poor or economically weaker sections (EWS) are exempted from auction.

But the realtors are not particularly contented with the exemption. Owing to limited land bank with the state government, the government is unable to unlock much land for real estate development. And adding to this, the auctions that are going to be held may increase the rates, said developers.

To meet the prevalent demand for residential real estate sector, the available government-owned land is insufficient. The new land policy is of not much benefit to builders. And therefore the developers have been asking for a new urbanization policy to address the issue, and they have already submitted their demands to the government.

As the new land policy is not likely to solve the problems surrounding land issues in the state, the developers are being optimistic about the upcoming urbanization policy.

According to ULCA 1976, the ceiling limit on vacant land in a category ?A? city like Kolkata is 7.5 cottah or about 500 square meters. This is another major concern of developers in developing township projects in Kolkata and other parts of the state.

West Bengal is among the few states in India that have a legislation like the ULCA. The demand for relaxing the ULCA norms was raised for the first time by the chairman of Godrej Properties at an industry meet.

And later during??Bengal Builds? summit on real estate sector that was held in November 2012, real estate developers had strongly demanded lenient laws and sops governing real estate development in the state. The chief minister of West Bengal, Mamata Banerjee, had ruled out any concessions to the developers due to the poor financial condition of the state.

The chief minister had also announced the formation of a task force to examine the obstacles for urban infrastructure development in Bengal, focusing at formulating a new urbanization policy.

Quinn will veto gaming bill - Capitol Fax.com

* As if there was ever any doubt, Gov. Pat Quinn will veto the gaming bill that was finally released last week from a parliamentary hold?

On Oct. 17, 2011, Quinn announced that if Cullerton ever did send him the 2011 bill, he would veto it. So the bill sat, until last week. At the end of the expiring General Assembly, Cullerton cleared off his desk and sent the measure to Quinn. And on Friday, Quinn spokeswoman Brooke Anderson assured us that the governor will follow through on his 2011 threat.

* Meanwhile, I?m not so sure this smoking ban explanation is correct?

According to a year-end report issued by the Illinois Gaming Board, [casino] revenue for the 2012 calendar year was $1.6 billion, which was up slightly from 2011, but down by about 38 percent from 2007.

Tom Swoik, director of the Illinois Casino Gaming Association, which represents the Metropolis casino, Harrah?s, said that the 2007 smoking ban and an economy that took a turn for the worst are two reasons for the dip.

?Once the economy starts improving, I think that casino revenues will pick up,? Swoik said. ?I think it will be a long time if ever that we get back to the 2007 figures because they?re not going to change the smoking ban.?

?All of the bordering states that have casinos do not have a smoking ban, so we lost about 20 percent in 2008, and we?ve lost an additional 18 or 19 percent on top of that since then just because of the economy,? Swoik added.

* It turns out, things are tough all over, despite casinos allowing smoking. For instance?

Revenues at Northwest Indiana?s five casinos dropped by $24.3 million in 2012, the second straight year of decline with the state of Indiana predicting more declines ahead.

The five Northwest Indiana casinos raked in $1.11 billion total in 2012, as compared to $1.13 billion in 2011, for a 2.1 percent drop overall, according to a tally by The Times of Indiana Gaming Commission monthly revenue reports. That drop compares with a 5.5 percent drop statewide in 2011.

And?

All but one of the St. Louis area?s six casinos experienced revenue declines in December.

Pinnacle Entertainment?s River City Casino, in Lemay, received 3 percent more from gamblers last month than it did in December 2011. But that was the only growth among the area?s casinos, according to figures released Thursday by state regulators.

Winnings fell slightly at Lumi?re Place, Pinnacle?s other casino in the St. Louis market.

The biggest drop took place at Hollywood Casino, which changed hands late last year. Penn National Gaming paid Caesars Entertainment $610 million for the casino and adjoining hotel in Maryland Heights.

And?

Nevada gaming revenues took a nosedive in November.

Statewide, casinos collected $782.6 million from gamblers during the month, a drop of almost 11.1 percent compared with $880.1 million collected in November 2011.

On the Strip, gaming revenues fell 12.8 percent with casinos collecting $431.8 million from customers, compared with $495.2 million collected a year ago.

The Gaming Control Board released the November numbers this morning.

Clark County gaming revenues as a whole fell 13 percent as every reporting area showed year-over-year monthly declines. Casinos along the Boulder Strip reported a 26 percent decline in gaming revenues while revenues were off 24 percent in North Las Vegas.

Downtown Las Vegas gaming revenues declined 17.2 percent.

Monkey Money: Podcast Pushes Celebrity Buttons | Press Release ...

2013-01-14 19:00:52 (GMT) (WiredPRNews.com - Entertainment, Press Releases)

01/14/2013 (press release: myradiomonkey) // New York, NY, United States // Elsie

This is not monkey business. They?re completely serious. And there could be big charity money on the line.

New York City based Internet radio podcast program ?Monkey Radio with Marc? has publicly challenged popular celebrities William Shatner, Tina Fey and Jon Stewart to a kind of ?interview race,? all in the name of raising money for charity.

In what may be an innovative approach to promotion, the quickly growing program, which has gained more than a quarter of a million listeners in just four months, has launched a campaign on the fundraising website Indiegogo, which includes an explanatory video. Like other fundraising campaigns on the site, supporters can donate as little as a dollar to ?Operation Shatner/Fey/Stewart?. At the conclusion (in this case, in 45 days from the date of launch) the money can be donated to a charity.

The difference is this: there?s one catch, and it?s a big one. One of the three celebrities (Shatner, Fey or Stewart) must consent to at least a ten-minute audio interview on ?Monkey Radio with Marc?. Once the interview has been provided, the show?s producers have agreed to donate the funds raised in the campaign to The Wounded Warriors Project in the name of whichever of the three celebrities agreed to step up to the microphone first.

The Wounded Warrior Project, according to their website, ?works to raise awareness and enlist the public?s aid for the needs of injured service members?, among other purposes.

So why these three entertainers, and why this approach? Show creator, executive producer and host Marc Raco says he reveals the full story in the episode which premieres January 14th . ?One is an idol, one has been a close call and one has been a near miss at least five times,? Raco states. ?It?s about swinging the bat and hoping for a home run. We?re willing to swing the bat. We know it?s a long shot, but long shots are what the entertainment business is all about. We just hope one of the three will take 10 minutes to make a dream come true and grab some cash for this important organization. If we get lucky, the men and women serving our country will benefit via The Wounded Warriors Project. It could be amazing.?

Co-host Ben Rose concedes that this is an unconventional approach to requesting an interview. ?Our show is growing fast, and we?ve had some notable guests. We?re on the map enough that we want these bigger names. We?re new enough that we might not yet be on their radar.?

Raco adds ?Who wants to be the celebrity who didn?t have ten minutes for those who have risked their lives for us? I wouldn?t. That?s one of the reasons we are doing this? He goes on to say that there were several charities he has considered, but The Wounded Warriors Project won out because every citizen has benefitted from the sacrifices of service men and women.

Either way, the show?s producer (known only as ?Elsie?) says that whatever money the campaign raises will still go to charity. ?We can?t wait to give what we hope will be a big check. Even if somehow we don?t get the interview, we?ll still have that. It will be a win no matter what.?

She notes that as of the time of the campaign?s launch none of the named celebrities have endorsed the campaign or agreed to participate as of this interview.

In a twist, the show is offering one more incentive to sweeten the pot. The campaign?s ?Buddy Bonus? proposes that if one of the celebrities concedes to an interview, and also brings along their most famous colleague (Leonard Nimoy for Shatner, Amy Poehler for Fey and Steven Colbert for Stewart?), the program will also add that wining celebrity?s name to their own show title for six months. Considering the weekly one-hour show has been averaging more than 80,000 listeners monthly, ten minutes of time may be a good trade for what could be useful, free and easy promotion for even the most known star.

Internet-based radio shows, also called podcasts, can range from low-tech conversations between friends which reach very small audiences to successful enterprises hosted by known entertainers and celebrities. Originally from Rochester, NY, Raco is also an actor, comedian, filmmaker and songwriter. He says he launched ?Monkey Radio with Marc? as a platform to entertain and with entrepreneurial intent.

?We hoped we?d soon reach hundreds of people and build from there,? he recalls. ?Suddenly we?re in the hundreds of thousands and growing steadily, with sponsors and amazing guests. We?re laughing, we hear our audience is having a good time, and we?re talking to fascinating people like infamous computer hacker John Threat and producers of the edgy animated show ?The Annoying Orange? and more. Now it?s time to bring it up a couple of notches.?

Raco, who was also recently honored by the Governor of Kentucky as a Kentucky Colonel, noted that he feels a responsibility to live up to the title, which has inspired him to take this charitable route with his program. The website of The Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels states that members must ?reach out to care for our children [and] support those in need).?

Elsie adds, ?He wants to talk to his idols. It probably should be the President or a famous director like Martin Scorsese or someone like that. But if we can get Bill Shatner or Tina Fey or Jon Stewart? And then do some good by raising some cash for charity? We all win.?

More information on ?Operation Shatner/Fey/Stewart? can be found at the podcast?s website www.monkeyradio.info. The Wounded Warriors Project can be found at http://www.woundedwarriorproject.org.

According to the program?s campaign, funds are being raised on behalf of Wounded Warrior Project Inc, a verified nonprofit. The campaign does not necessarily reflect the views of the nonprofit or have any formal association with it. All contributions are considered unrestricted gifts and can?t be specified for any particular purpose.

GOP congressman threatens impeachment if Obama uses executive action for gun control

Texas Republican Rep. Steve Stockman threatened Monday afternoon that he would file articles of impeachment against President Barack Obama if he institutes gun control measures with an executive order.

Stockman warned that such executive orders would be ?unconstitutional? and ?infringe on our constitutionally-protected right to keep and bear arms.? (RELATED: Levin: If Obama sidesteps Congress on debt ceiling, ?no choice? but impeachment)

?I will seek to thwart this action by any means necessary, including but not limited to eliminating funding for implementation, defunding the White House, and even filing articles of impeachment,? Stockman said in a statement.

At his press conference Monday, Obama floated the possibility of using executive action to enact policies aimed at reducing gun violence.

The freshman congressman, who served one term in Congress in the mid-1990s, further labeled the possibility ?an existential threat to this nation? because, he said, the purpose of the Second Amendment is to allow the people to protect themselves from tyranny. (RELATED VIDEO ? Walter Williams: People misunderstand the point of the Second Amendment)

?Any proposal to abuse executive power and infringe upon gun rights must be repelled with the stiffest legislative force possible,? he added. ?Under no circumstances whatsoever may the government take any action that disarms any peaceable person ? much less without due process through an executive declaration without a vote of Congress or a ruling of a court.?

He concluded by claiming that an executive order would be not just ?not just an attack on the Constitution,? but also an ?attack on Americans.?

?If the president is allowed to suspend constitutional rights on his own personal whims, our free republic has effectively ceased to exist,? he said.
