Great Britain's Mark Cavendish misses out on ... - BBC World News

Mark Cavendish?s hopes of winning Olympic gold in the men?s road race ended in disappointment after he finished well off the pace on Saturday. (Picture: Getty) In the closing stretch on The Mall, 2000 Olympic silver medallist Alexander Vinikourov of Kazakhstan pounced to beat Colombia?s Rigoberto Uran for the gold medal, with bronze going to Norway?s Alexander Kristoff. The Great Britain team did well until the final quarter of the race, when they were caught by the field, and once Chris Froome ran out of gas, world champion Cavendish had just three Great Britain team-mates to try and keep him at the front of the field. The finale took another twist as Switzerland?s Fabian Cancellara collided with a crash barrier after coming out of Richmond Park, while another major contender, Belgium?s Tom Boonen, fell off the pace. But around Putney High Street Uran and Vinikourov broke clear of the field and began a game of cat and mouse for the race to the finish line on The Mall, with the Kazakhstan rider timing his burst to perfection as he charged up the right-hand side of the road to power home for victory.
